so wow...that was easily the most fun i've had behind the wheel of a car, and the weekend as a whole was the most fun i've had in a long time.
we ended up 7th, i think. 200 laps back or so from the winner (a miata). the FX16 spent a lot of time in the pits:
1. our exhaust fell off during the pace laps on Saturday--not a good sign, as it foreshadowed numerous failed attempts to muffle the 1.6L of raging 4AGE beast. we ran most of the day with no exhaust past the manifold...loud, but not unbearably so. and the engine, instead of running out of breath around 6700rpm, pulled strongly through 7500. we left the actual exhaust (a piece of pipe and a cherry bomb) on track twice. we also left our replacement (a chrome supertrapp) out there.
2. it had to be pulled in immediately after the start of the race w/ a high-rpm stumble. after 20 minutes or so of guessing and diagnosing, we decided to live w/ it. it went away, and we think it was due to overfilling the gas tank.
3. the car died in hour 2 with an electrical problem...a blown fuse on our ignition circuit (the car starts by flipping the ignition and fan power switches, then hitting a start button).
4. late saturday afternoon, the car died on track again. the time, the culprit was an inner cv joint...the bolts holding the axle to the transmission had sheared off, spitting the axle from the tranny. we traced the problem an incorrectly-mounted subframe--it was bolted too high, and had been abusing the bolts until they failed. we fixed the subframe and were able to get 4 bolts in to hold the axle on.
5. sunday = more exhaust-related black flags. more failed repair attempts.
6. our race ended with 3 minutes left on sunday afternoon when the car died again. apparently the brakes had been going, but that wasn't the issue. the axle (same one) had removed itself from the hub, and the whole thing was about to fall off the car (only the strut was keeping it connected to the car). my theory is that when we were working on fixing the inner joint issue, we neglected to properly torque the axle nut when we put the hub back on. (i also burned the hell out of my hand by stupidly pushing on the brake rotor to get the lower strut bolts re-aligned).
all in all, an awesome weekend. can't wait to do it again!
