2024 CX-5 Trunk inconvenience

There have been times when I arrive home from work, I want to open the trunk without turning off the car so I can unload my work gear. I can't open the trunk via the button on the dash. While the car is still on, I get out and try hitting the button from the outside trunk button. That doesn't work at all. In order for me to open the trunk, I have to turn off the car. Anyone else experience this? Am I doing something wrong? Is this a safety thing from Factory?
It's an inconvenience.

You should never open the hatch with the engine running because you are allowing C02 (exhaust fumes) to enter the cabin in doing so. Furthermore, in high crime areas, you'd be allowing access to unwanted visitors. Consider the inconvenience a safety feature.

I find that if I have the key fob in my pocket I can open the trunk with the engine running via the outside trunk button.

Thank you for your reply. I agree with you 100%. The only time I need to open the trunk while the car is on idle, is when I arrive home. As for CO2 fumes, I'm not concerned. I breath worst toxic air at work.
It never click on me someone jumping in . I'll keep that in mind.

You do not have to turn off the car. You just need to press unlock on the door before pressing the trunk button. As long as you're in park, of course. Though when you're arriving home from work, I fail to see why the engine needs to be left running.

My CX-5 is set to ParkGear-n-UnlockAll mode.
So this is not a problem for me.
I can shift gear to Park (engine on or not), and walk out to the back.
(no need to bring fob with you)
The key point is.... the open button on the hatch does not unlock the hatch.
It has to be unlocked first.

Imagine that someone tries to open your hatch while you are at a stop light....

Yes and Yes

As a few others have pointed out, just tap the unlock button on the driver's door on your way out. (Or even without opening the driver's door if you're not getting out and just need to let a passenger have access to the rear hatch i.e. dropping someone off at school/work/airport/etc and you're not getting out)

I would say it's set like that so hatches don't inadvertently open at inopportune times. That puts the driver in control 👍😁

Never crossed my mind..thank you.

I've heard people have successfully 'snagged' a code from the remote somehow to gain access when the owner is gone. I just hit the armrest button on the way out.

That's how modern car theft happens. They use a repeater with an antenna, press the handle button, car sends signal looking for remote, remote talks back and unlocks the car.

Finally, I did what you said. Lock and unlock the doors, and I was able to open the trunk. Thank you for the advice.
