I wasn't sure which subforum this should really be posted in. Mods, feel free to move.

This started the day after I leased my 3. After a week I took it to the dealership and of course they heard nothing, they probably didn't turn off the heat so they could hear and just wrote it off as 'it's probably the cold weather.' (pissed) It was 45 outside the day it started, so not so cold. The video below is after a 15 mile drive so the car had a chance to warm up.

There seem to be two sounds coming from the rear, a loud squeal when backing and a grinding sound when going forward over 10 mph. There is also a weird whine sound when going forward, almost sounds like my wife's old Corolla did when it needed a new half-shaft. The squeal and whine are quite noticeable in the below video. I did find some threads where similar sounds were coming from prior model years as well.

Any thoughts? I emailed the service manager and my sales rep yesterday, the car has less than 400 miles on it so far.

If the brake rotors were exposed to water/snow/salt, they could make squealing and/or grinding noise until braking action removes rust that flash-forms, very quickly.

Years ago, the day after I washed my daughter's Protg, she went to take it to school and heard this awful grinding noise. I knew exactly what it was when I saw the rotors.

That was taken immediately after driving a bit yesterday. I have experienced the rust on rotors from rain/snow before, but the rotors are clean. Just some streaks on the rear rotors like something is scratching them. Going to try another dealership this week.

Maybe debris caught between the rotor and the pad. If you show your video to the service manager or sales rep, I'm sure they'll force the mechanics to look further into it.

Check your rotors to see if there's any premature wear or grooves.

There are some grooves on the rear rotors. Have an appointment Thursday, their master technician is back from vacation. Definitely taking the video with me.

There was a bent backing plate rubbing against one of the brake rotors. So they bent it back to how it should be and my car sounds like it should now. No clue how it happened, I have not hit anything at all in the <400 miles I have had the car. Anyway, I am happy that my car sounds normal now.
