2008 Mazda5 5MT Sport w/ Popular Package
For the veterans in the forums, you might remember this car :). It seems that the next gen will make it to Canada after all. Compared to the current generation, this actually looks very decent. Still, no sliding doors, booh ;). I think KIA has come a long way since. Now, 6 Manual transmission? I believe it when I see it...

2014 Kia Rondo

The 2014 Rondo is a refresh of the model that has been in Kias line-up since 1999, while the Cadenza full-size sedan is an all-new addition to the family.

Well get to the Cadenza later, but the 14 Rondo is the car that really turned the heads of the journos on-hand at media preview day in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Aside from the low-volume Sedona minivan, the Rondo Urban Utility Vehicle (UUV) was the last vehicle in Kias line-up to not have benefited from the firms new styling direction. Indeed, the old model was not a sight for sore eyes, looking more like it had been designed with an eye for necessity as opposed to one for any real stylistic interest at all.

The new car, on the other hand, is a vast departure and does well to make use of the new grille shape, available high-intensity discharge headlights (that feature massive lenses) and handsome lines found throughout the line-up.

Youd be hard-pressed to associate the old car with the new one by looking at it from the outside; inside, however, the optional three row seating, broad view out and high seating position from the previous model remain.

It is and has always been a truly unique car, the Rondo, one that has very few direct competitors this side of a Mazda5. Actually, the new car seems to even have a little in common with the new Mercedes-Benz B-Class, a testament to Kias awareness of the fact that even for people-movers like the Rondo, styling is important, especially when the vehicle is aimed at young, urban families as the Rondo surely is.

Power comes from a single engine option, and thats a two-litre, four-cylinder gasoline-direct injection mill that makes 165 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque; thats slightly more power than whats made by the Mazda5, but down a little on torque to its Japanese competitor.

Like the 5, however, youll be able to spec the Rondo with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission; people moving with a manual box? Thats a rare thing, and a testament to the sporty intentions of the new Rondo. We like.

In addition to the three-row seating (whose second and third rows fold completely flat), the rest of the interior benefits from Schreyers touch in the same way many other Kias have; nice lighting, quality materials and comfortable seats. The car on display in Toronto was top-spec, but having driven Kias with lower trim levels before, Im sure the Rondo will do just fine.

Look for the 14 Rondo to hit dealerships later this year.

What's wrong with Kia?? I'm not a fan of their products but get one as a daily driver. I shopped the Rio and Spectra 5 door, which are nice cor what they are but there are better options. Kia today is not the same Kia of early 2000s.

From what I've read, they have come closer to learning to properly engineer and then tune their chassis' and suspension's than Hyundai has, but many still say that their is a lot to be desired in fun/driveability of them when compared to Mazda or even some Ford's now. They can't seem to dial in a good balance in their suspensions. Of course, if you are comparing them to say Toyota's which have some of the softest suspensions out there, they probably have caught up with them, but yes they have come along way in the area of durability from a decade ago.

1.Bad resale valve (even car salemen say that)
2. uncomfortabe
3. Not made as good as mazda toyota nissan subaru
4. I hate KIA cars

Yeah, I am really not a fan of the Koreans either yet, they will have to actually start engineering cars that are fun and comfortable to drive instead of depending on overly inflated EPA ratings and flashy sheet metal for me to consider buying one. To me Hyundai and KIA are like brick veneer, looks nice, but in the end doesn't have any of the qualities of real brick. In other words, all flash, but no real substance, what good is tech packages out the wazoo, flashy styling, and so called good fuel economy, if they can't engineer a car that is fun to drive.

Finally, another seven seater six speed manual option.

My brother has a 2012 Kia Rio5 SX, it's a really nice car. My only worry is that it won't drive quite as sporty as the 5, but I would consider one.

I've followed this Rondo/Carens reboot for a while and had hoped to be able to choose between it and the Mazda 5. In the end I just got tired of waiting for the Rondo (and indeed, there's no indication that it will even be made available in the US where I am) and got the M5 and I'm happy with that, but this new edition of the Rondo looks great.

Good stuff but also KIA adds a lot of bling-bling that makes it a good seller. KIA is good at packing them lately.

My only worry is that it won't drive quite as sporty as the 5, but I would consider one.

I think a high percentage of potential owners on this segment do not care much about the driving dynamics of the car I'm afraid

My wife owned a 2006 Kia Spectra. I can honestly say that it was by far the worst vehicle I've ever dealt with.

Horrible gas mileage for a small 4cyl., cheap cheap cheap materials used all around, horrible electronics and the paint was about the worst I've ever seen.

The deal breaker here, I think, is the hinged back doors. The sliding doors on the 5 are such a bonus, especially with kids, that I don't know how we went so long without. Interior-wise, this Kia makes good use of space (7 passenger seating is nice too) but without the sliders, it's just a car. Back doors are a PITA with little kids.

Just had a Kia Optima for a week while the 5 was in the body shop (pissed) and it was quite nice. Roomy, peppy, nice interior for what it was, very nice pearl paint, good mpg. I think Kia has made dramatic improvements; you can't compare to their older stuff.

I would agree that KIA has come up from where they were in the past, but for me their suspensions and driving dynamics still don't compare to Mazda's, and for me that is a big deal. Also, the sliding doors were a good decision for the 5. That is the thing about the 5, the way it is packaged, makes it hard to beat. A vehicle that is built on a compact car platform, handles almost as good as the class leading 3, has seating for 6, but isn't a large tank like most full size vans and SUV's are, gets decent gas mileage for what it is, and has a sticker price of a car, not a CUV or regular size van.. Many CUV's have some of those features, but not all of them. very hard to beat that.

I had an 09 Rondo LX for almost 4 yrs. It was a good car with lots of features for the money. In the end the suspension was getting real noisy and it was plagued with rear brake issues. Then again the 09 Mazda 5 I hear had the same issues. Hopefully the new 2012 5 holds up as well as Consumer Reports says it will.

?? More details please

Consumer reports rated the 2009 Mazda 5 below average for reliability with black marks for suspension, brakes, squeaks and rattles, and fuel system. Even my wife's 2012 5 with 1000 miles has noticeably more suspension noise than my CX5 with 14,500 miles. Sometimes it sounds like something is loose under it. Our 09 Kia Rondo though was a rattle bucket by comparison and the new 5 rides much better over the rough stuff.
