6 speed won't downshift into 2nd?

I purchased a 2012 Mazda5 with a 6 speed today, took it for a very brief test drive. Went through 1-6 just fine. On my way home, I tried to downshift to 2nd multiple times and it will not go into gear. I was originally thinking it must be some safety feature, now I'm not so sure because I think I'd have found some Google results. Why would it go into 2nd fine from first, but not third into 2nd? Can anyone offer any advice? Thank you

It could be a synchro issue.
Have you tried this sitting still and going up and down the gears sans clutch to see how they engage?

It could even be something as simple as a clutch cable out of adjustment.
How deep have you looked at this?

Clutch isn't cable actuated, it's hydraulic.

But still, could be old fluid or little bit air in the system, or just worn syncros (most propably).
Also new gearbox oil could help, if they aren't that badly worn.
