During a media event in Wolfsburg, Germany today, Volkswagen confirmed that it will sell a version of the Golf R in the United States. The Golf R, which will be known as the GTI-R in the U.S., will replace the R32. Along with Volkswagens 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, the GTI-R will get 2.0L TSI 4-cylinder engine making 265-hp with a peak torque of 258 lb-ft. The engine will be mated to a 5-speed manual or Volkswagens DSG automatic with manual mode. Look out for the Volkswagen GTI-R to hit U.S. dealerships later next year with a price slightly above the 2010 GTI, which starts at $23,489 . 2010 Volkswagen Golf R : By: Omar Rana

Instead of sexual chocolate in the movie Coming to America this is more like the newest Volkswagen pocket rocket that will be coming to America in the form of a R20 instead of the infamous R32.

Volkswagen just revealed their new R version of the MK VI Golf (6th generation Golf) at the Frankfurt Motor Show last month. Just recently we received a confirmation that the new Golf R version aka GTI-R or R20, will be headed to the United States branded as GTI-R.

The 2010 Golf GTI-R will have the same engine as the Scirocco R, which we will not see in the U.S. It will incorporate VWs 4Motion all-wheel drive system matched to a 265hp 2.0-liter TSI engine. Of course the DSG tranny will be an option which is good for a pocket-rocket dash from 0 to 60mph in 5.5 seconds. Top speed is limited electronically at 155mph.

Too bad the R32 boy-racer fans, no pun intended, may be disappointed to see the 15-degreen 6-cylindar not returning but replaced by a turbo 4-banger. But guys, this allows you to do more tuning! Smile!

I just got these articles off the internet and it looks like the r32 replacement WILL be comming to the america market after-all. I personaly would enjoy the 5speed manual myself..but will have to see..hearing that the price will be "slightly" above the gti could mean anything..I think this car has alot of tuning potential and could possibly be my next ride :)

it defin looks promising. awd tonnes of power in a small package. im for sure going to take one out for a spin, hell maybe even trade the ms6 in for one lol

I would consider it for the AWD, which is the only item I wish was an option for the MS3. Then again, we'll have to see what $$ this thing will cost...

That's a hot looking hatch! Love the interior.

Had me a little highway fun with a newer R32 today. Poor guy :)

lets just hope they offer a six speed

Good job on reading the OP...

That is a sweet looking ride. And the interior is awesome. I like understated elegance. Kind of puts the 2010 Speed 3 design in perspective...

I don't know where you got the info but it says on Volkswagen's own sight that the GTI-r will not hit the markets till 2012...

The exact date I dont know. Everything I have ever read on this car is about late 2010 time frame..I never heard 2012 at all from any source. As for the reason of my post, Im just indicating that this car is actrully gonna come to u.s.a.....cause for quite some time there was lots of talk that it would stay in Europe only. So in terms of details like..will we get the 5speed manual or dsg tranny or both...how much it costs and when exactly will it be here..those questions are up in the air for now. I just went to www.vw.com which is thier official site and searched all over to find the news about 2012..and I didnt find it..where did you go? I really dont see vw talking about this car so much right now..with all the hype..plus its a known fact that Europe does get the car in 2010..for them to wait 2 more years so they can hand it to the american market.(dunno)

i'm in looooove w/ that steering wheel. (kiss) look like there'll be a test drive [at least] in my future.

I can't find any info on curb weight. Unless they get it below 3100 lbs, which seems unlikely with 4wd, it is not going to be any quicker than our MS3's except out of the hole. May end up being more like the MS6 in performance, but with all the "reliability" that VW is known for.

You need to look at it in another way MSMS3....and your right about not being below 3100..But they do plan to make it fair amount lighter than the r32...and that car was around 3500...the gti is 3050-3100lb if I remember correctly-"spec ninjas feel free to correct me"...Im thinking honestly about 3300 lb...so yeah with 265 hp and 258-260 tq..yeah not any faster "stock"..But holy s*** brother Ill bet the tuning is gonna be very nice for this car..this shares the same engine as the audi s3 in europe which tuners are making 600hp on stock block...I think this car is has alot of potential...so while it will be about as fast as a ms3 out of the box..I think with simple bolt ons and a tune this car will prabaly be running some impressive #'s...think about a protuned stage 2 sti and then add german engineering and refinement and sexy interior..and wow you got a pretty cheap alternative to a porsche 911.. just my 2 cents :)

Ill bet the tuning is gonna be very nice for this car..this shares the same engine as the audi s3 in europe which tuners are making 600hp on stock block

If they are indeed making 600HP, that's with a hell of a bigger turbo, and likely some upgraded internals, so something like $6-8 grand with labor to install and tune?

If you want that much power, might as well buy a used Audi B5 S4 that already has upgraded turbos...you can get nearly 500HP "reliably" for much cheaper. Can probably get one for $12-15 grand these days.
