2010 Mazda5 AT Shifting problems

Car novice here so pardon the naivet'.

I've got a 2010 5 AT with ~26,500 miles on it. A couple months ago, I noticed the transmission seemed to be slow to shift when accelerating between 40-60MPH and then again from 60-80MPH. It also feels like the transmission "stumbles" when downshifting through the same speed ranges as you decelerate on the highway.

Maybe not related, but the other day my wife was driving on the highway with Cruise Control set at 80MPH. She had to slow (manually braking) to 75MPH...when she pressed Resume to cruise at 80MPH again, the engine "red-lined" until she tapped the brakes and the engine shifted.

The dealer of course said they can't duplicate this performance...anyone have any similar experience or ideas on what might be going on?

Thanks in advance!

Again, the tranny in these cars is a joke. First, disconnect the battery and let it sit for 30 minutes. It will "re-learn" how to perform. If that doesn't help, take it to the dealer and have it flushed. Make sure the idiots at the dealership know that the fluid has to be M-V, not Mercon V. Seriously, force them to confirm audibly that they understand.

I had to flush mine at 26,000 miles because it was shifting harder. It was doing some strange things while downshifting in particular. Your case sounds almost exactly like mine. I shifts much better now, but I believe I'll have to do it every 25,000 miles to keep it from dying.

Thanks for the reply Robotaz! I've got to have the seat release strap replaced on the 3rd row bench this week...I'll ask them to disconnect the battery and flush the tranny while they're at it.

UPDATE: So I'm finally getting around to dealing with this issue. I noticed a few hundred views of this thread so I'm wondering if people are just curious or they have also experienced the same issue. I've been able to narrow the issue down to whenever I roll through a stop/turn and then try to accelerate - the car just doesn't seem to want to go when I "ask" it to. Looking at the maintenance schedule I don't see anything about flushing the transmission, but I've even had one dealer tell me it's recommended for the 5. Shouldn't we be considering some group effort to get the problem identified and resolved? I don't mind flushing the transmission every 25K miles, but if it's not called for by the manufacturer, shouldn't that be raising a red flag?

I love my 5 but am really concerned about the quality (or lack thereof).

This supports what you're feeling. I plan to get a flush my next visit, or may do it myself. I'm already at 23, xxx miles in less than a year. Even if 90% of that has been highway miles, it's cheap insurance in my opinion.

Thanks for the input! After the holiday, I'll get the trx flush done. I do plan on filing a complaint with Mazda USA and talk to them about also filing with safecar.gov. If I NEED the car to accelerate and it doesn't, that's gotta be a safety issue.

Does the transmission not downshift regardless of how much you press the accelerator?

The cruise control has little tolerance when it comes to maintaining set speed, search the forum and you'll see other complaints of this. The fact that you are cruising at 80mph (probably 3000rpm), slowed down and then RECALLed the speed before accelerating back to that (too fast) speed, is exactly why the transmission behaved in that manner.

I fail to see the unsafe aspect of this BTW??

i've owned several mazdas and none of them listed a tranny fluid service interval, and that makes dealers say it's not needed. But both make money off new car sales, so..... It doesnt mean you shouldnt change it. Every single tranny in the world that has fluid should have it changed. Just common sense to replace all your fluids with some regularity. I always judge atf fluid by color instead of milage. If you have trouble seeing the red dye, its time to change.
