Hi all, just wanted to know if anyone has had occasion to remove the front Bumper of their CX-9. I'm looking to install a secondary mesh grill behind the factory ones and this job is worlds easier if the bumper is off the vehicle. Anyone have access to the FSM perhaps could scan me the pages. Many thanks in advance.

Veilsie1, the service manual has been posted on here, just download it. fyi: not sure if you have any experience with taking bumpers off, but you usually have to end up buying a bunch of grommets, clipt & retainers that break in the removal process. Sometimes, the big plastic brackets will have a tab or 2 break off as well, and then you have to replace the brackets... could end up being expensive to r/i the bumper. But it is a good idea with the mesh behind the bumper. I had thought about it, because it just takes a tiny small rock to start a slow leak in the a/c condensor. (I had considered thick screen door mesh)

thanks helbig, i'll do some looking around. I've done this to every car I've owned and usually use metal gutter mesh. I'm still amazed that manufacturers still don't routinely install a simple grill to protect the pricey components down there.

I just removed the bumper cover this weekend to replace the silver "smiley face" trim piece.

The service manual is in another thread somewhere, and it covers 2007-2009. The 2010 is the same, I think. The fasteners along the bottom might be slightly different.

In a nutshell, there are 6 fasteners (2 threaded, 4 plastic pop-rivet type) along the top of the cover (you need to open the hood to get to these). The threaded ones can be removed with a phillips screwdriver. The plastic fasteners need to have the center pin pried up and then worked loose.

In the wheel wells, there is a bolt near the bottom (10mm I think) and another plastic pop-rivet type fastener near the top of the bumper cover (these are a real pain to remove, I had to work at these to get the center pin up). You also have to pull the front part of the plastic fender trim piece out to free up the bumper cover.

Along the bottom of the car, there are 3 "under trays". I ended up removing all 3 of these. The center tray one attaches to the front bumper cover with 6 or 7 phillips screws, and 2 bolts attach the rear of tray to the frame of the car. The side trays attach with 3 screws and 2 plastic pop-rivet type fasteners. (This is where I did things differently than the service manual - the service manual says you can leave the trays attached and just remove 2 bolts holding the rear portion of the center tray on, and possibly some of the fasteners on the side trays, and the whole assembly should come out.) If you remove the side trays now, you can reach up in there and disconnect the wires to the fog lights at this point (if you have fog lights). Otherwise, you have to disconnect the wires when the entire cover is loose, which is rather unwieldy for one person (speaking from experience here).

Once the fasteners are all out, you have to separate the bumper cover from the fenders. There is a plastic piece behind the seam where the cover and the fender meet, and the cover snaps into this piece. You have to pull the cover out firmly.

All in all, it I managed to remove it without breaking any of the fasteners, but the ones in the wheel wells are a pain.

here you go, thanks to some fellow CX-9er's posting some videos,

I wonder if anyone has tried to interchange between any of the 3 different generations, I believe all the mounting locations are the same. It'll be cool to swap the front out and trick the family that I bought a new car LOL. It doesn't look too bad, mostly clips on top/sides and screws underneath, looks pretty straightforward.
