2006 vs 2007

Hello to all.

In the u.s. the 2007 m5,s will have a 200 msrp increase.
I am looking at the sport model only with the auto, and basically as stock as I can find it.
Mechanically speaking, is there any reason why I should wait for the 2007,s coming out in a month or so, or would I be better off, getting a better deal on a 2006.
There seems to me to be no changes whatsoever that I can see.
Please enlighten me if I am wrong. I would like to as informed as possible. LOL

Thanks

Don't forget that the warranty is better with the 2006 (4/50) than the 2007 (3/36). Good reason to get the 2006. Mazda typically makes few changes the second year a model is out.

Why did mazda decide to lessen the warranty? Does not seem to be good judgement, when a lot of other manufacturers are lengthining their warrantys.

I think Mazda's new warranty terms align them with those from Toyota and Honda rather than the Hyundai/Kia warranties which are impressive to compensate for thier percieved lack of quality (so why doesn't Ford have 10yr/100k?....jk)

That's exactly right. The perception is that longer warranties are better, but the truth is that only the more troublesome brands or brands looking to get a foothold in the market (remember Chrysler's 7/100,000 warranty) have the longer warranties.

Longer warraties are not all they're cracked up to be especially when they come with a deductible. Long warranties also don't mean the dealer will treat you right or fix the problem correctly the first time.

My first Mazda (Protege) had a 3/50,000 and it ran to over 100,000 with little more than regular service.

True, but the 06's roadside assistance is also 4yrs. Is it the same for the 07?

Manufacturers extend warranties when they need a gimmick to sell their cars. See also: Domestics.

IMHO, $200 is a drop in the bucket when buying a car. With '06 sales, yep, you could probably find a good deal... a lot better than $200 if you shop around. But just remember, being the very first model year of the car, the 06 may have a slightly faster depreciation when trying to sell it in a few years, making up the slack anyways. I'm the type of person that would opt for the '07, but that's just me, you can't really go wrong either way.

Learn from me, however... if you order an 07 new, you're asking for a 3+ month wait.

Good luck!

Unless you are going to order exactly what you want, the 2007's are allready here. We got ours 2 or 3 weeks ago and got the car we would have ordered from dealer stock. We did have to call around to get the right dealer, one of the local dealers told us the 07's would not be available untill January (yea sure).

The other thing to consider is resale value down the road. Lets say a few years go by and you decide you want the 2010 Mazda5 'cause it comes with traction control, the new passive laser restraint system and self driving mode on properly equiped freeways. Go to KBB.com and see the difference in value for the same car 1 year apart. I did it quick for a 2001/2002 Protege with the same miles and came up with $7140 suggested retail for the 2001 and $7715 for the 2002.

The depreciation thing is true, but you should be able to take care of that right out of the box. Most dealers right now should be about ready to cut a big chunk off of the 06's to get them off of the lot. That way you get to keep your money now, not get the money back when you sell the car. If it was my call I would go into the dealer around the end of this month , end of third quarter, try to make a deal on an 06 and see just how desperate they are to hit a sales target. And if that doesn't work out, you can always pick up the 07 a week or two later. Either way, in the end you get to drive away in a great vehicle!!

P.S. I would first try the dealer that told you the 07's wouldn't be in until January, that guy probably has a batch of 06's he is trying to get rid of before bringing in the 07's.

I tried to have negotiations on price of 06 leftovers with three mazda dealers all whom are withing ten miles of where I live.
They all have stock, and seems to be the same stock from two weeks ago, so it looks like they havent been moving.
The price quotes I got were nothing spectacular. I told them I was looking to buy now if the price is right.
I told them the price they are quoting me, is nothing special, especially considering you have not been selling the ones you have, and the 07,s are due soon.
I told them to think about it, and call me and let me know, if you can come down a bit, to a more reasonable
price.
I havent heard from any of them. Either they think they are going to sell the stock m5,s at a good price, or they think I am eager to buy, and dont want to deal.
This has not been my experience with other car dealers when I have purchased other new cars. They always seem to call you and reduce the price, till it reaches the golden spot for me.
Never had a mazda before. Does Mazda have any type of return deal with dealerships if the cars dont sell?
Very strange. In fact they dont seem to be under any pressure to sell a vehicle.

Flatfoot, just my opinion, but it seems like you're going about it in the wrong way. You're doing it in the way that you're FORCING them to do you a favor, like it's expected. In reality, you should be less intrusive in that you really want the car.... "But....".

I honestly don't mean to sound like a jerk, but they probably feel like it's worth holding off for the next shmuck that they can have more control over the situation. A car salesman thrives on the feeling that he's in control, and you're giving him the opposite impression.

Just be like, wow, I really love this car and I could buy right away, but....... I dunno if I could swing $xx,xxx right now until I save some more. Make yourself appear vulnerable and the salesman will be relentless in pursuing a sale from you.

This doesn't really work for an 07 or especially ordering a new one from the factory, but when a dealer will try to push one off the lot, then yeah, they'll probably bite.

Good luck

Thanks for the advice. My approach is that I take a more informed approach, and in nyc that seems to work, till this time.
I hadnt gone looking for a mazda, but the m5 caught my eye, and we kind of fell in love with it. It would fit my needs just perfectly at this point in time for my spouse.
As we all know, we know more about the cars we are looking at then most salespeople.
I usually ask a few questions(playing dumb) to see what the salesperson knowledge is) and its usually lacking.
When I first asked the difference between the sport and the touring, I either got three wrong answers, or answers they thought I wanted to hear. Its hard to tell sometimes, and I consider my self pretty perceptive.
I prefer the informed approach, but the dumb approach may be needed here.
I just find it curious their lack of effort. Not normal. I have purchased for myself and my children a fair amount of new cars over the years, and have never seen a lack of salesmanship and effort on salespeople like I am getting from the mazda ones in my life.
Thats why I asked, if they have some special deal with mazda, on buybacks..

Yeah, it is pretty disgusting how uninformed some car salesman are, it's their profession for crap's sake!

And yeah, the two dealers I initially stopped in are night and day, the first one was full of a bunch of punks that only care about lining their pockets. The one I ended up ordering through is much more curteous, down to earth, and eye-to-eye.
