I have a 2003 Protege5. I'm looking to purchase an exhaust system. I have looked at the RActive and Mazdaspeed and they look pretty good. I'm leaning towards the RActive. Since I know nothing about these, I need some recommendations. Help!

A cat-back isn't really necessery. I just installed my HKS Hiper axle-back last night and it sounds great. What kind of budget do you have?

My budget for exhaust is no more than $500.
500 in USD right? then why don't u get racing beat cat back
they cost $350 to $450 depends on the vendors.
everybody seems really satisfied with sounds and performance wise.
or if you like to spend little less like $200 then get Mazda sport exhaust!
I got this 2 days ago, and i love it.

I want to spend at most $500 USD. I want the best of both worlds, power and sound, but not too loud. I will be installing this myself and am very experienced. I like the look of the RActive. I also looked at the Racing Beat. It looks very stock-like, but I'm sure it's good as well. The HKS website shows something called "Hi-Power" exhaust, but I'm not sure if that's the same as the one mentioned in a previous post.

I wish I could install these stuff myself too. :(
skunk2 also have catback system but ppl said that it's not worth spending money and it's expensive. around $600???.
I'm not really sure if ractive have specific exhaust for our cute MP5, but racing beat does.
try this site then

they have HKS(i thinks this is just muffler, not cat back) and RAcing beat.
if this isn't enough for you...hmm.. search is the only option :)

i have the racing beat cat back. nice exhaust. not very loud and doesnt look like a melon shooter on the back of the car. i give it 2 thumbs up. racing beat bolts right up and u just need to hang it.. i didnt install mine because the guy i bought it from did it for me.. but it took no time at all..

Hiper is short for Hi power. So, the HKS I have is the Hi power. The installation on an axle-back is a breeze, 2 buts(14mm) and 2 hangers and the stock muffler is off. As for the catback, it's not much harder.

OKay, here's a list of exhausts for the P5:

1) Racing Beat - too stock like for my taste but a cat-back
2) GReddy Evo - catback & great sound but it's another month or 2 away.
3) Skunk2 - Catback, expensive, and too loud.
4) Bosal - I don't like the look of it.
5) Mazdaspeed - No opinion on it.
6) HKS Hi power - My personal choice.
7) SR motorsports - Never seen one.
8) JIC Magic - True JDM but expensive.
9) Ractive - Um, cheaply priced and cheaply made. They fall apart quickly. I wouldn't touch them.

Now, here is my opinion. A cat-back is a waste of money. The stock piping is over 2"(around 2.1" or 55mm exactly) already and a cat-back won't do any justice. I know that on my civic, the stock piping was under 1.75" and replacing it with a 2.25" cat-back made more sense. I personally like the look of N1 canister type mufflers.

i have the mazdaspeed and i love it. i would like to have a Ti exhaust or atleast the muffler but i am affraid it would be too loud. if you get the mazdaspeed you won't be disappointed. i am sure the same goes with the HKS. it really comes down to personal opinion. i don't like the style of muffler that is on the HKS. that is just me. i prefer the mazdaspeed because it looks like it belongs on the car. you know, almost stock. good luck
