I'm sorry to register and post right away with a question, but I'm a very new Mazda owner. I bought a Mazda 3 in august and like it so much I picked up a 03 tribute with 113k kms on it as a second vehicle.
I've had the tribute about a week. I changed the oil, filter, air filter and fuel filter and filled the tank. I travel 70kms 1way every day to work and it's been working beautifully. On the 4th day I was creeping up on 500kms on the tank and it was pouring rain,(we got over 100mm of rain in 24 hrs) the truck was acting like it had all week...fine. I got to work and parked for 9 hrs. Still raining, I was heading home but as soon as I started it, I could tell something was up. It was idling really rough and shuddering slightly, then the CEL started blinking. I put it in park and gave it a couple of shots of gas to see if it would level out and the light stopped blinking. It still wasn't idling 100% but I started for home.
The light stayed off for the most part but whenever I had to stop in traffic the would blink and when i'd get to start moving it would stop blinking again. On the Hwy, (90% of my drive home) it didn't come on but at hills or inclines it was still hesitating.
I got home and read the codes: P0316 and P0305
From what I can tell that means it was misfiring on Cyl 5 and that the misfire was present at startup.
I left it over night as the weather was supposed to clear overnight. Started up for the drive to work this morning and it appears to be working 100% again.
1. I'm thinking the coil may have a crack in it or is going...thoughts?
2. I was also curious if someone could confirm the cyl number layout for me for certain.
3. The dealer here, wants $160 plus our lovely taxes for a single coil. Is it detrimental to use aftermarket electronic parts on these motors? Is there any sources this community would suggest in buying parts. (must be available to Canada)
4. Is it ok to replace just one of the coil packs? (never had a vehicle with COP before)
Sorry the post is long. Let me know if I left anything out.
Thank you,
Kevin
