2002 Protoge 5

Hello everyone, just wanted some input on a protoge 5 that I'm thinking of buying tomorrow.

It's a 2002 Automatic Protoge 5

-Silver
-103,000 Miles.
-Leather Interior
-Auto (I believe tipptronic?)
-Cold A/C
-%15 window tint

Has all upgraded speakers, 2 "15 Kicker Comp Subs, 2 Amps, all professionally installed, upgraded head unit.

(Don't know all the exact specs of the audio equipment, but comes with the car)

From the the pictures it's near-mint, few minor dings and dents.. nothing major at all.

Is there anything I need to know about this car, what to look for? How many miles do these things go for?

He's asking $5000 for the car.

Sound like a good deal, or what?

Here's a picture of the car:

By the looks of the pics the one your looking at is an '03.
I would say that the price is about right if everything is
in tip top shape. no major maintenance needed. I Know
of a turbo'd P5 with 89,xxx miles on it for around $7000.

GD...I payed $14k for my 02 in 04...lol...depreciation is a b****!
Eh oh well...I bought in from Carmax and it came with a warranty lol.

Anyway...go for it.
But if I had a choice to do it all over and get a 5-speed...I would.
I have an autotragic too...also a tiptronic. Its not fast, but thats why I have the Miata. :p

Like speedracer said, those pictures are of an '03. I think the price sounds right if everything is in top shape and it's been well maintained. I bought a 5 speed P5 less than a month ago and would highly recommend it. I think this car would feel much too sluggish as an auto.

At 103k miles it due for a timing belt change at 105K unless it was changed earlier.

I'm not getting the car to "race".

I have a 03 Z1000 if I want to do that.

I also have 3 mustangs, but I'm selling 2 of them.

Is the car still worth the 5k even though it needs the belt? That's about $500 job no?

I don't want a manual car because then I can't let my gf or certain people drive it.

My gf also has the 02 protoge and I've been driving it around, it's pretty quick for being what it is..

I'm used to my 5.0 which puts 300+ down, but the bikes still faster.

But I just want the car to cruise around with and get good gas mileage.

I'd say it's a good price even if it needs the tb done (you could use that to negotiate the price down though too).

Last year I got an estimate for my mechanic to to the tb and water pump and total came to approx $850....if you are handy you can do it yourself for about $400 in parts.

From what you've said - i would say 'go for it'.

The car has been reliable.

Ask about a recall for the intake manifold VTCS screws (or run the VIN on a recall site to see if this car is affected).

Well I'm going to be going to check the car out in a little while..

If all checks out, I'll probably pick it up.

I was looking at kbb and it sais around 6500 for the miles/year.

I'm going to try to talk the guy down to 4800 range because in 2k miles it does need the timing belt.

What gives here In Canada Mazda says timing belt at 60k miles. Has to be the same damn belt but why the different milage recommendation.

Pat.
