2002 Protege5 not shifting into 3rd gear…Help

Hello, bought a nice 2002 Protege5 auto for my son couple of years ago. has 140,000kms now. Been running well until recently. when driving pass 50kms, it is not shifting to next gear, just rev and rev as if its in neutral. However, when press the Overdrive Button, it will go into gear. Can anyone help please. My mechanic cannot figure out. Much appreciated.

Unfortunately, I think you're looking at needing your transmission replaced. The choices are to have your transmission rebuilt or replaced. A rebuild would have to be from a highly reputable shop in your area but it won't be cheap. Probably in the $3K range. Another option is to find a remanufactured transmission. This was the best deal I could find on a remanufactured transmission.

I went the rebuild route so I'll report on how much I was charged.

You can disregard that advice until you have someone reputable with transmissions (such as a transmission shop) inspect the transmission first. You will likely need to simply replace a solenoid.

yeah definitely take it a reputable transmission place first. I did the whole changing out solenoids, filters, fluids and sensors thing and still had to take it to a transmission shop. Good luck!!
