Mazda Protege5
Ok so recently my engine started acting up and now its running on only 3 cylinders. its come down to needing to swap the engine for another on. My main questions are will it matter if the engine is from another protege5 or can I use one from a 02 protege sedan? Also does it have to one that has a manual transmission or can I use one from a car with an automatic?

just to fill in details.
I have 02 Mazda Protege5 with a 5speed Manual transmission. Need to get a new engine asap, as I cant drive her the way she is
Any info that could help is greatly appreicated and welcomed 😊
Thank you!

It can be from either transmission, doesn't matter. Use the flywheel from your current engine.

You want a 2000 and newer FS motor. I believe you only have the 626, Protege, and P5 to choose from. Probe and MX3 were discontinued in 97, those were all distributor motors.

So just to update, motor swap was succussfully done. Engine came from an automatic protege5. She runs perfect now. Thank you for the info 😊

I blew a motor this week and am looking to swap it out myself. Can you tell me how long the procedure took you? I would like to estimate how much shop time I'll need.

If you've got an engine hoist, a couple sets of hands, and all the right tools, it should take 8 hours max. Even easier if you have a lift and can just pull the car off of the motor and drop it over the new motor. This is of course assuming it's just a straight replacement.

Set aside a weekend if you're a DIYer.

I spent a day on mine. I also had to swap everything from my old engine to the new long block. I pulled the engine and trans Frome the top.

Even a flat rate tech would be cutting it close at 6 hours. Most FWD engine replacements bill for 8-12 hours.

While the engine is removed it's a good time to throw on a timing belt, clutch, crank seals, etc.
