2.2 Million Mazda Hatchback recall! CX5, CX3 and Mazda3 hatchbacks

Apparently salt can corrode the gas struts that hold up the rear hatch. The anti corrosion used on them was deemed not sufficient and need replacing.

Not good news for Mazda's finances. I'm impressed with how they stand behind their product. But this type of expense will detract from their investments.

I took mine in this morning for a first oil change and the fuel filler pipe recall. The Service Advisor volunteered that there is another recall for the hatch (I told him I was aware) and that they expect to have the parts when I bring it back for inspection in November. I am in Upstate New York...liberal use of salt in the winter here.

Just a thought - wouldn't there be potential for risk of corrosion at the point the dampers attach to the car and hatch if/when replacing (metal on metal screws)? There are now a bunch of articles posted about the recall, but I haven't seen in any of those I read where it says how quickly this could become a problem. Has anyone with an older CX-5 noticed the part rusting?

Thanks, yrwei52 - I saw the other thread from a few days ago...was debating into which thread I posted/replied.

I question how wide-spread this is and if the repair subjects the connection point to equal risk of corrosion (hopefully this makes sense). I saw from the 2015 post that someone recommended covering the bolts w/grease to help protect. While I anticipate having the dampers replaced before winter, would grease or wax really help to protect?

I don't think the dampers will get replaced by the recall as the connecting part of the damper to the supporting bolt is plastic and it has no effect by the rust. Taking out the damper and applying grease definitely will help preventing rust in the area and providing lubrication at the connecting joint.
