1999 Mazda Protege 1.6L

Hi. I have been searching the forums trying to find something specifically for the 1.6L (manual), but couldn't find it, so here it is.

I have some questions as I start to mod my car.

1. I am planning on putting a cold air filter on it, but I can't find anything that is made for the 1.6L. Are there any out there that I am just not seeing? Would the filters for the 1.8L work for the 1.6?

2. I would like to know your take on the OBX Header? Good? Bad?

3. I am starting to look for a cat-back exhaust system (I am putting a cherry bomb muffler on today, so that will satisfy me for a bit, but I will want to upgrade soon). Any favorites to look for? Is it challenging to upgrade the system. I know that I am going to have to make a custom mount for the cherry bomb to fit right.

4. For the gauge cluster (I have the DX), is there anyway that I can switch gauges to the one that has a tachometer? I really don't need it, because I have been driving without it for two years, but it would still be nice to have one.

5. Is the Evo2 body kit (with the fog lights) fairly easy to install. I have decent experience, and my dad has tons of experience in the garage, but I don't want to have to do extensive body work to install it.


Is there any other modifications that won't completely destroy my bank account? I am still a noob at modding protege.

Go to youtube put in 99 protege exhaust theres a bunch of exhausts.I live in cali so all I can find is the magnaflow exhaust and I like it.but ive heard corksport makes a awesome exhaust. 1.8 intakes wont fit. And weapon r short ram 1.6 will work however there is a thread on here where you can make your own.and you wont really see any difference in hp if you upgrade the engine. Unless you turbo it.suspension is where its best.people say they can out handle corvettes with the rite mods

I would suggest not wasting your money on any of the mods.

It is a 1.6L car so why do you think you can make it sound or appear like a hot rod? When I see cars like my Mazda Protege with fart cans and loud obnoxious bling my only response is to laugh at the circus car.

Just buy a 10 y.o. Mustang and start right.

If you want to make more power the best you can do is boost it trust me its best bang for your bucks. Trust me the zm is a boost addict (yes). If you have any question feel free to pm me.
