1997 Mazda 323/Proteg 1.3 Can i turbo it?

hello all, JamieR here, new to the forum and excited to find a Mazda community online.

I'll get straight to the point, I've heard alot about mazda turbo engines on familias, protegs and 323's, I want to know is there any kind of it i can buy to turbo my 1.3 lump.

i am currently working on cosmetics, as i cant afford insurance on a bigger engine, i want to get as much as I can out of this one.

I am an apprentice mechanic and grew up working on engines so hopefully i could tackle it.

any other performance suggestions are appreciated also.

Current Mods;
exhaust
de-cat
intake (induction kit)

then some cosmetic mods.

You can turbo anything, my brother is planing to turbo his scooter in the near future. You will have to find a manifold or have one made, that's the hardest part, everything else isn't car specific

yeah, i would need a stand alone ecu? to control fuel injection when on boost? or i could have the original ecu remapped to do this. i agree the manifold is the hardest part.

i wonder has anyone done this before on this forum.

thanks for reply

With the 1.3 probly not, many have done it with the 1.8 though. Which you should consider swapping into yours first.

yeah i thought that, i wonder would a glanza 1.3 turbo fit under the hood. . like mounts etc . . i'm still in dream land. . :) if only swapping engines was as easy in ireland, i might consider it.

You can always order one, you'll need mounts wire harness, and trans. Manifolds are easy to come by for them.

Just do a search and see what other cars use the same flange that you can get a manifold for.
