12 Ton Shop Press

Hey everyone,

I'm currently in the process of changing my drivers side wheel bearing, but currently do not have a shop press. Most shops are wanting to charge around $100 for me to bring the part and have the bearing pressed in, but I have been able to find a 12 Ton Press for $120.00.

Will a 12 ton press be strong enough for the job? Has anyone had any experiences where they used one for a similar bearing?

You're talking about the Harbor Freight press, right?

I think it'll be fine, the few people around here who've done it used that press. If I were you I'd call around some more, $100 is a ridiculous price just to press in a bearing.

100 dollars is rediculous I had mine done for $125 in labor plus the bearing which was another 25 and that's me dropping the car off and them doing all the work and it was a reputable mechanic too

harbor freight always has a ton of 20% coupons floating around, just used that or ask a manager if they can drop the price if you sign up for an ITC (inside track club)
i work at a HFT so if its the same part im thinking of, we will damn near give the thing away

Keep calling around...you should be able to have it done for $50 or less...I found a shop that would do it for $50 and that was both front bearings. Call machine shops, not auto repair shops. I've found they're more likely to give you a cheap, flat rate.

I just did this and the shop charged me 20 bucks per side. It's only a few minutes worth of work after all. Look for another shop.

Thanks for all the replies.....I called around and was able to find someone to do it for $60, but I decided just to get the press and attain some new knowledge and experience. You can't put a price on that

Had a good time working on it too! Hardest part was getting the spindle to separate from the lower ball joint.....that sucker was stuck on there foshizzle.

But no more grinding noise and the added satisfaction of getting off my lazy a$$ made it a great 5 hours lol
