10" Sub Suggestions

OK. Here's my deal. I've been rolling around with 2 RF HE12's powered by a RF 700 watt amp. It sounds great and hits hard, but I really miss having a hatch. With this in mind, I purchased a custom 10" box for my P5.
I know that 1 10" isn't going to sound as good as 2 12"s no matter how much money I spend, but I'd like to be at least near where I am right now(with the 2 12s) in terms of SQ & SPL without having to buy a two-foot-deep speaker.

So far on my list is
-a Brahma 10 Very impressive, but how's the SQ?
-another RF sub. Not sure which one, but this is a contender: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=39774&item=5718393910&rd=1
-JL 10W7. The industry standard it seems, but expensive.
- Diamond. Again, I'm not sure which one, or even if Diamond makes good subs. I do know that I've heard their component sets and they're really nice.
-Other?

Thanks for any input. I'm pretty clueless when it comes to subs, so let's have your expert opinion!

one 10 is quite possible to sound better, and be very close to as loud as what you have now. you won't be able to tell an audible difference if the single 10 is less than 1 dB lower than the pair of 12's. when comparing the displacement of a single XXX 10 to the pair of 12's you have, the 12's displace about 1.2 times the amount of air that the single 10 is capable of. that means that the pair of 12's will be 1.2 dB louder than the single 10. a brahma 10 would be about 1.9 dB's less than the 12's. both have much better SQ characteristics than the HE 12's, but they both require a ton more power. the W7 from JL sounds great, but it will be even quieter and the price is a bit higher. i could get you an orion H2 that will be as loud as a brahma 10, but requires more power, for $280 shipped. i have a set, brand new, never been powered. they have less SQ capabilities than the W7, brahma, or XXX, but more than the RF subs you have. they also require a bit more power than all the others.

Thanks for the reply, gotwake.
Your posts about them is the main reason I've been checking out Brahmas. I plan on keeping my RF 700S amp and bridging it to power one sub. In your opinion, would it have enough power to drive the Brahma? I'm really liking those subs.
Also, my box is about 1.25 sq.ft. Enough?

Thanks again, and sorry for all the n00b questions. :)

How deep is the box?
Be sure your options will fit.Obviously, check that each sub is ment for a sealed enclosure and will not be too deep.

For your list:
Diamond TDX
Eclispe Aluminum
JL 10W6v2
Image Dynamic IDMAX

It's a little under 6 inches deep. Thanks for asking, because I wasn't thinking about depth.

Yeah, now that I (finally) take depth into consideration, my choices have narrowed. Looks like that RF one I like won't fly either.

I'll put in a recomendation for a CDT Audio Extreme Excursion Sound Quality Subwoofer.
Model: HD-1020 10 20MM X-max Subwoofer
10" Subwoofer w/ dual 4ohm voice coils - 600 watts RMS
10" Extreme Excursion 20mm X-max cast alloy subwoofer

I've got one in my trunk and I'm incredibly happy with it. I used to bump an Infinity Perfect 10 which was also a nice sub.

The W6V2 and diamond audio TDX are also out.

I think the focal subs or eclipse subs might fit.

6.875 listed on a brahma. A Koda 10 would fit, those're sub-5" but they're only rated for 300wrms. Sound REALLY good, but not tons of output.

I'd Give eclipse a good look. I don't know procing off the top of my head, but they've got a pretty decent amount of throw for not toomuch depth.

Thanks again, Craig(and MrEDZ for the suggestion). I wonder if it would be possible to make some kind of adapter or ring to get a little more depth out of my enclosure.

As I'm sure you know, I like Focal. I'm gonna check into them right now. :D

Cool. You guys rip. This is exactly what I was hoping for. So far I'm gonna look into:
Eclipse
Focal
CDT
Maybe RF(it was listed as 5.9" deep)

I'm pretty sure CDT uses the same baskets as eclipse, and half of everyone else for that matter. IN all honesty, as much as the company is a pile of dickbags, an eD 10a would fit that bill, just don't expect any form of customer support or non-asshole treatment. Either way you'd want to get a used flat-cone model... hmm. I saw another company using the same baset jsut recently as well... I'll dig a bit, let you know if I see it.

As for the spacer ring, you COULD do that, yes, but that might get kinda ghetto. Especially with that sweet smooth box. As I recall that enclosure did have a fairly deep mountinghole, though yes? perhaps 1/4-1/2" of spacing wouldn't hurt... That still wouldn't gain you enough for pushing any of the deep ones.

yes it is possible, and that will give you more options for a sub. 1.25 cu ft is rather large for a single 10" sub. i've heard of people using brahma 10's down to .3 cu ft. here's a link to give you an idea of how enclosure size effects power handling.

course with some adapter rings you could put a w7 in there, which JL recomends 1.25 cu ft, and 700 watts would be perfect for it(cool)

I have one JL Audio 10W3 running only 300W in a sealed box, and it sounds really good to me. Bass is deep and tight, and loud! The biggest reason I like it, is the box does not take up much space, about 1 cu ft at most...
