Went to parts store yesterday to buy an oil filter for my 2010 MS3 and they only listed up to 09', no problem because it's the same engine as the previous model MS3.

Wrong! The 10' MS3 has a conventional spin-on filter. I called my local Mazda parts department to confirm and it is.

The Mazda part # given is: LF0514302A

Does anyone know where I can cross reference this # for aftermarket filters, thanks.

Never mind, I went on Fram's web-site and found this info: Fram part # is PH9566

I'm starting to wonder if this should be stickied. :)

Wow, I feel stupid for thinking I discovered something, lol.

I purchased my 10' MS3 on August 31st and had not discovered this site until a couple of days prior to my 1st post and I posted this on the the other MS3 section of this site. (because I'm an idiot, it was moved here by the admins) I was reading the oil change How-To for the previous MS3 and since I couldn't find info @ Advanced Auto and other parts stores about the 10' I figured same engine......

Today will be my 1st opportunity to actually change the oil and I already have 1800 miles on the car, I really wanted to change it at 1000.

Oh Yeah, THE CAR IS A BEAST!!!!

I just picked up one of these filters today from our Mazda dealership. He mentioned that oddly enough, it's the same filter that used on the base Mazda 5. Said I could use that as a cross reference if I'm looking for another filter brand.

hmm.

WOW, so I changed my oil today, and the filter they gave me at the dealership was NOT identical to the one I took off of it.

The one that came off of the car was a FoMoCo branded Mazda LF8J-14-302. The part the dealership gave me was LF05-14-302A. The original was just a little bit wide/thicker in diameter then what I was given. Once I got it off, I found that it was indeed a little wider then the one given...probably by a few millimeters. The seal ended up around the same place, but it wasn't the same part.

It still threaded on correctly and works fine, but it wasn't the same. Hope to get some answers to this before my next oil change.

Oh yeah, and as anyone knows who's ever bought a car from Mazda new...it was tightened to an INSANE level! Even with a filter wrench I BARELY was able to get it to move!

FWIW, somewhere on the internet it was suggested that part number LF8J-14-302 appears to have been superseded by LF10-14-302 which appears to have been superseded by LF05-14-302A. Don't know if this is true, but it would tend to make sense given some of the info above.

Also, interestingly, the Ford oil filter that is designated for my wife's Mustang GT has changed size... same part number, different size filter... yes, it got smaller.

thats so you don't notice the leak... they'll keep downsizing the filter so you keep putting the same amount of oil in LOL

oddly enough, that said, I put in the manual-stated 6 quarts....and it's above the full mark by a good 4-5mm. Something doesn't give. I even let it empty for almost 15 minutes while hot.

I will mention that i've never had a drier filter change. There was oil in the filter, but NOT A DRIP when unscrewing it. Kinda unheard of for me.

did my first oil change today, 1178 miles.

-original filter was on extremely tight, but drain plug was extremely loose. (dunno)

-original filter was black FoMoCo #LF8J-14-302. a decent splattering of oil came out as i loosened filter.

-oem filter from mazdaparts.org is Mazda #LF05-14-302A, which is, as stated, slightly thinner and shorter (dunno)

-oil was soot-colored (dunno) replaced with non-synthetic 5w30 per manual.

-added full contents of 5 quart jug plus 1/2 quart from single bottle (thats 5.5 quarts, capacity per manual is 6). ran it briefly, shut it down, checked 15 mins later. slightly passed MIN on dipstick. added 1/4 quart. good to go.

the end.

(glad i saw this tread to confirm the filter part # difference)
