Unless you're starting off with a 4WD 1st gen pro. It would be almost impossible to make the FWD into AWD. The drive line and exhaust won't fit in the exhaust hump in the floor. You'd need a 4wd rear axle assembly and the 4wd gas tank(with both fuel pumps).

From what I've been told the 4wd(no LSD) 5-speed trans. is weak. The AWD(LSD) trans. is better. The GTX's and GTR's are AWD. The GTR is a GTX trans. with cryoed 1st and 2nd gears, but they are really rare. And the 4WD/AWD trans. use a different type shift linkage than the FWD. The 1.8L GTR/GTX DOHC Turbo engine should bolt right up to your stock 1.8L 5-speed. And I believe that some people are running the GTX trans on there FWD cars.

I have a 93 protege also 1.8l sohc my motor might be soon crapping out as the compression in 1 cylinder is 120 and over 170 in all the others..

and im thinking of putting in a DOHC engine if possible.. figure i might be able to get a used good one and make the swap for less than a grand..

would i need to change my tranny as well tho?

As far as I know the 1.8L SOHC(103HP) is identical to the 1.8L DOHC(125HP) with the exception being the head. The trans mounting bolts are in the same spots and it should be a rather easy swap. As long as you're staying with FWD you won't need to swap trans.

Try this link and scroll to the transmision part at the bottom. It has some more info on engine swaps.

Also this is a good link for the GTX motor swap.

Ditch the SOHC tranny for the BP (us LX 90-94) tranny as its stronger than the SOHC one. In doing so you will need a new set of axles, half shaft, and speedo cable from the same car.

There were some GTX's that came as FWD in Europe markets I have read about.... usually the GTX/GTR's come with the AWD trannies, and no you cant make it into an AWD car easily like MSpeed323AWD said.

pawel r - ditch it, b/c with boost, the problem is probably just going to get worse.

The SOHC ecu may but it may not be optimized for the DOHC. I've been recomended to switch out the ecu. even if I was just gonna swap in a bp from a 90-94 protege lx(DOHC). And to make sure to pull an engine from the same trans type as my old one or to get the complete wiring harness as well.

Yes I have seen a SOHC ecu run a DOHC motor for months with no problems..

You wount have VICS though. That cost you low down tq and some HP in the upper powerband. Its not reccomended unless you have a gtx or gtr where there is no VICS present.

hit up www.car-part.com , there are usually cheap LX ecus in most areas. escort GT ecu's will work as well, just make sure they are from 91-95 (I think in the late 95/96 models they went to an OBD-2 system with more sensors and crap)

You can run the DOHC motor off of the SOHC wiring harness, just add the VICS wires... couldn't tell you for sure exactly where, but its all on clubprotege.com somewhere.
