1.6 turbo...

I've decided to work on building my own turbo (more fun in the game) and i noticed that i need a Garrett/Mitsubishi T-28.. I was wondering, i was searching on that part and noticed that all i could find was the Big T28 Upgrade DSM 380hp.. will that cause a big difference in the room provided in my engine bay? meaning will that be to big to fit in my car? if so would anyone happen to know where i could get the T-28 that is applicable to the size of my engine bay? i would rather build my own turbo than buy one.. why? wheres the joy in parts pre-made? :)

Thx. Jay

The T28 is basically a sleeper turbo, it's the same size as the T25 but is ported with some other work done to it. The T25 will obviously be cheaper, but the T28 outweighs that price difference in sheer power. The T25 will start falling in boost around 5500rpm, whereas the T28 will hold boost until redline and with much more potential further down the road.

To find a T25 local, just hit up a junkyard and pull one out of any 95-99 Mitsu Eclipse GST or GSX/Eagle Talon TSi.

Hope this helps.

Taylor

so what your telling me is the T25 has more boost potential? if that's the case i'll just go bag a turbo (yes bag) (first)

but if you're telling me the t28 has some serious potential, i might just spend the extra cash and work with that... what are the 1.6's using in there kits?

No, I'm saying I definitely wouldn't go with a T25. If you want a cheap turbo, go with a 14b from a 1st gen (89-94) DSM (Eclipse/Talon/Laser).

Yes, the T28 does have good potential.

awsome so i'll stick with the t28, it should help me out :) i just want to increase my hp (as my bro is showing off with his new engine) i have to try and keep up.. of course 2 mazdas cept i have a protege and he has an mx-3... its a long shot but i still have time!

to use the t25/28 ur gonna have to get a custom manifold made, and dp, the t25 is a really good turbo for the 1.6l cause of its size and size of our engine, basically no lag. full boost at 2.5k .. some even at 2k

but the best overal turbo for our engine is the IHI vf 24 from hiboost ... amazing power and spool time , with his kit , and lower the engines compression 20psi is obtainable..

sounds interesting, in that case instead of modification i should check out hiboost's turbo.. I wanna spend as little time with changing the engine as i want to make this happen in a weekend. The only modifying on the weekend of turbo installation (if i have the time) will be removing the engine, clean up polish possibly add new wires and than install the turbo and return the engine. So as little modification is optimal.

well by little mods i mean not much/little fabricating and i dont wanna spend more than a weekend installing... i want it roughly to take 20 hours or less if possible.. 2 people working on it of course.

as for fuel mods, i figure i find out from peoples opinions.. i want a crisp running turbo and who better to ask than people with experience.

fyi the stock 1.6 injectors are worthless past like 4psi, on my t-25, so you need bigger injectors, upgraded fuel pump, and of course some type of fuel managemt, via a standalone, or a FMU i currently run a rising rate adjustable FMU, and it suits my needs well, dont go with the vortec unit, because there is no real tuning there, with an adjustabe you have alittle bit of tuning, which is better then none.

like i told you on clubprotege, the t-25 is an awesome turbo for the 1.6 litre, but wont yield you the numbers the t-28 will, both turbos have there up's and downs, the t-25 spools insanely fast, i make full boost at like 2k, so i have virtualy no turbo lag, but it does lack the power up high, as shown in my dyno graph i reach peak power at 4k, then it drops off.

dont get me wrong it still pulls hard all the way to redline, but from looking at the graph you can see it lacks the top end power.

now if you decide to go with the t-28, you will more then likely not see any power until about 4k, but from 4k and on it will be a beast, so you will lag alot more but have more power uphigh, so its all preference really, i was actualy going to swap in a big t-28 this year, and see how it did, but i dunno i still have to think about it, here is the one i was looking at, it is physically the same turbo as a t-25 just diffrent insides.

i really dunno i run 330cc and it does fine, no real need to go any bigger then 330cc tho i run rich as is.

hmm, gonna have to look into that.. i am gonna do everything right the first time around.. dont need a blown engine next month... what brand 330cc injectors you have?? the wrx ones?

nope i swiped them from a bp-t moter first gen protege

also i dont believe the wrx injectos work for the 1.6 litre, they are shorter, as are the injectors for the 2.0's i bought a set of mazdaspeed ones to see if they would work, and they were too small.

you can basically use any injecors for the first gens protege's, and second gen's as well as miata injectors, and older mx6 turbo ones. as long as they have the ovel plug you should be all set.

sweet, thanx for the info, i am on ebay and the 2nd gen forums looking for some 330cc , i just want some plug and play ones to go with my Vortech fmu..
