It's actually more helpful to answer the question, and then remind him to search next time he has a question. If the build date is 08/01, it's an 02, not 02.5.

No problem. While it is always a good idea to search first, and there was a recent thread about the 02 vs 02.5, I just get tired of seeing new members getting jumped on for asking a question.
there are other signs to look for. Tiptronic trannies were introduced to the 02.5, the cup holders were put in with no lid on it, there was signal lights put on the fenders, and i believe the wheels are different. Not 100% sure on the last part tho.
All that is true, but those are things that a previous owner can change out or add. They can't change the date of manufacture, and if it was made in 01 it's not an 02.5.
the 02 had a lid on the cup holders.. 02.5 didnt
the 02 has different color on the insides of the gauges..
the 02 doesnt have the side turn signal like the 02.5...
different rims
maybe different shift knob (maybe not?)
