0171 - check engine code

Hi,

The check engine on my car has lighted up and I plugged it to get the code.

The code is 0171 (System too lean). I called a mazda dealer and they told me its the o2 sensors or the pressure regulator but they can't tell me witch one because they have to plug it into thier computer to know (but I don't want to pay that extra money).

My car is a Mazda Protege 2001 ES 2.0L. My EGR Valve is new.

Anyone know what is causing this problem?

Reset the code and see if it happens again. Sometimes the ECU can sketch out and run too lean for jsut a second. If it happens again, most likely O2 sensor. Do you have a fuel pressure gauge?

I don't know about the pressure gauge but it dosen't matter if I reset the code because my car is really having problem (the rpm always(when I'am stopped) go near the 0 and come back to normal for 2 seconds).

id bet on the o2 sensor as well. although, could be clogged injectors too. maybe try running a can of fuel system cleaner through it...

and my car has always bogged down a little when i stop. its a normal protege thing...

I'm a student at UTI i'm in the drivability and emissions class right now and it really depends on how you were driving when the code was set and you need a good scantool that can tell you what was happening internally when the code was set...and the dealer is right it could be either one of those components or something completely different.
