    Car stalling on cold starts

You sure it's not happening after you start it when you let out the clutch? Mine will do that if I start it in -30 and let the clutch out. The trans oil is frozen solid and needs a gentle release after a few seconds of running.

Actually I performed a little experiment before the snow fall, I drove on an entire tank almost entirely accelerating as hard as I could. Normally I have to fill up after 440 Km (272 miles). Pretty consistent on that. After my flogging experiment I had to fill up at 396 km (245 miles). So I...

Yeah in the winter if I get over 200 miles on full tank of 12 gallons I consider that pretty good. Car's pretty thirsty for a 2.3L four. Even the non-turbo is EPA rated at 22 MPG.

    MS3 in the snow?

I can't speak to the shadyness of the purchase or the quality of the car (Three broken lug nuts? yikes.), but I can definitely comment on the car in snow. The clearance is actually really good on this car, and when you combine the limited slip differential with Bridgestone Blizzaks chewing...

Cold early morning start up problem

All royalty payments aside, I think the car would still start with the clutch safety switch bypassed for remote start - but keep the parking brake on or it will drive away. Yes, even in neutral. It wouldn't get far but a few feet might get it into trouble.

Cold early morning start up problem

Totally normal, thick ass gear oil meant to protect the trans from 280 lbs of torque. Don't do anything to your car. I live in a winter climate of up to -37 C / - 40 F and its normal for all vehicles around here to drive forward a bit when you let the clutch out in severe temperatures. The...

    Suspension Noise When Cold?

Don't bother taking the car to the dealer to have the bushings swapped. The noise came back next winter season. I think you have to take the compromises of a racing style suspension setup as they come! I'm still impressed at the handling and ride comfort this car affords for what it is. I've...

    Some minor problems this winter

The car has never struggled to crank for me even at -35 C (-31 F). Maybe the canadian deployed cars have special batteries - mine seems to be an expensive made in japan unit. I rarely plug the car in, and I have left it for up to a week in -35 and it always cranks good. The battery in this...

Is the MS3 right for me?

My 08.5 seems pretty indestructable. The only thing I worry about for other people driving it is the clutch. These cars come with basically a factory stage 2 clutch thats pretty much an on/off switch that grabs really hard. I let someone else drive it, and for some reason the third time they...

First ever praise for stock MS3 shifter!!

Yeah I think Mazda used a thicker more protective trans oil in this car for performance/racing applications. On a really cold morning (-30 and down) the car will actually stall if I let out the clutch quickly in neutral - trans oil frozen solid. I'd switch to the synthetic stuff but I heard...

First ever praise for stock MS3 shifter!!

You've never driven a car with damaged syncros. Feels the same as this car in -25C - just won't go into second. At all. Double clutch and it slides in smooth as butter. Once the engine gets hot it doesn't need it anymore.

First ever praise for stock MS3 shifter!!

I feel the same way about the throttle response in this car. My kingdom for a hard wired throttle cable like on my older honda on the SU carbs on my datsun. 2nd gear gets rough at cold temperatures until the trans oil warms up - I use double clutching techniques to get by. I still don't...

Do you down shift while daily driving?

Same here, I have a brand new 2009 CRF honda enduro and it engine brakes super hard. I'm not revving it much either, enduro motors are all ohv single valve torque. At least this one is. EDIT: Roommate has a Yammy 250 and it engine brakes just as forcefully.

Do you down shift while daily driving?

I try to use the front and rear brakes evenly on my bike so they wear evenly, but I tend to ride the rear brake more at slower speeds and the front at higher speeds. It's a honda 230 enduro. I have locked up the rear brake a few times during practiced (or unpracticed) panic stops. It just...

New to the Mazda Speed3 Fam

Haha, since you have that covered, you have any advice for ME about not breaking bones on my new bike? I spilled on it a few days ago and got some road rash (gravel road), its not as planted as my dirt bike on that loose s*** (Honda CRF230L).

New to the Mazda Speed3 Fam

Welcome! I remember picking mine up short of a year ago, that was fun times. Keep the mods light, if any (nothing that starts fartin' with the fuel mixture or reprogramming the ECU) and you won't have to worry about anything else except changing the oil frequently, especially if you use the...

    Ms3 Mpg

Got 279 miles on this tank (13 gallons) for 21.46 MPG. Yay warmer weather! When it was -30 all the time I was struggling to get much over 210 miles on that same number o' gallons, had a really bad 16 MPG run during the worst of winter.

    Moving friction point

Most hondas I've driven don't engage until the very top of the travel. I could put my civic in first by basically nudging the pedal. Although it has 280,000 km on it so I bet its pretty worn down.

    Moving friction point

I'm pretty sure this happened to me as well. It definitely feels like its close to the top, I think its self adjusting. It occasionally was tough to get into third when it was brand brand new but it doesn't do that anymore, so maybe it wasn't disengaging all the way and now it is. I don't...

    Hesitation occasionally?

never had any hesitation in anything but fourth gear. Fifth and six just haul ass.
