    Protege 5, parts

Simple explanation: Car died, quotes at both shops were too expensive for what I wanted to spend. I had the P5 and an 03 Mustang GT with summer tires and it was supposed to snow in two days (1 dead car, 1 undriveable for the weather)...Nobody could install an engine quick enough to get the Mazda...

    Protege 5, parts

I didn't mention that the front bumper has a crack. It is in the pics I got at home that I'll be putting up. I'll update any of the other minor damage in the original post since others may read this before I post the pics. Located just outside of Chicago

    Protege 5, parts

Hi there, My poor Protege5 crapped out. According to Mazda and the local shop it is a spun rod bearing. Finally broke loose and killed the engine. A new/used engine is simply not worth the cost. So I'm getting rid of it. However, you guys have all been helpful to me in the past so here's my...

    Tick Tick Tick

Yeah, i know that, but it isn't the original engine that comes in my protege5. I've encountered this before with a Trans Am...the shops would not put a 350 in it when a 305 is what came in it. At least that's the shops around me...and I now get what you are saying, it is the same engine, but...

    Tick Tick Tick

My thoughts exactly...a lot of shops will only put in the stock motor though, unfortunately.

    Tick Tick Tick

So far I have not found anything close to that cheap around here. I don't want to get a junkyard engine, just because I have no idea of anything on it. So either a rebuilt or japanese used engine would be preferrable. Two quotes, 3k for a 30,000 mile japanese used installed. And $2500 for...

    Tick Tick Tick

even more reason I visit these forums... glad I asked here. Sounds like under 2k is very reasonable for what I need. I will be doing some new car search tomorrow since car lots are open and I have to cover all my bases, then engine searching sunday. I'll try to figure things out by Monday...

    Radio Removal

Follow exactly what they said, the only thing I can add is that it takes more force than you would think. I did it by myself and remember feeling like I would break it if I pryed any harder. In the end, I had to pry harder and didn't hurt a thing.

    Tick Tick Tick

Hmm...yeah. I guess part of the decision is based on a few other things lol. I'm not old by any means (I'm 25), but the car is yellow, bought it when I was younger. I feel like I'm ready for more of a "big boy" car, vs. this little yellow toy. It's been a great car though. I enjoy not...

    Tick Tick Tick

cbrcrx, where did you find this information? It would be useful. Hell, if I could get a used engine put in at that low a price I could just make this my beater car anyway and buy another haha.

    Tick Tick Tick

I'm in Illinois. From what I've found, just replacing the bearings will only buy minimal time and I will just hear the knocking a few weeks later. And with regards to the shavings in the oil, you are correct, they are most likely because of the bearing. But, the fact that they are there means...

    Tick Tick Tick

So my P5 was just diagnosed by two seperate mechanics...Loose rod bearing, with metal shavings in the oil...108k miles. So young! Anyway, thought I would ask some advice and thoughts from you guys. The consensus from searching (and mechanics) is that it's better off to replace the engine than...

    Bosch Universal Fit O2 sensors

Lol Shane...If it weren't so expensive to have a shop fix my car I'd have them do it, but it's worth the savings. I'm the type that just wants to get in, fix it, and be done with it. I don't want to spend any more time than I have to.

    Bosch Universal Fit O2 sensors

I say go with exact fit. I got the bosch exact fit last weekend and it installed perfectly. Time will tell on reliability. I have never heard of the exact fit causing any problems. However, I have heard of issues with the universal...namely the soldering and moisture issue brought up earlier...

    Plug for RockAuto.com

+1. Rockauto is a great online store. For any OEM parts I don't think you will find better prices. They also ship very fast. I received parts in 2 days via standard ground shipping.

    Hesitation under 3k rpms...

No problem. This site has helped me immensely so I would like to extend any help to others. I found all my parts online. Compared to local parts stores and shops I saved hundreds on parts alone. Spark Plugs (NGK V-Power) = $1.70 EA...$6.80 total Plug Wires (NGK) = $30 Ignition Coils (Airtek)...

    Hesitation under 3k rpms...

Solution! so far... So to recap: Replaced the Spark plugs, Plug Wires, Ignition Coils, and Downstream oxygen Sensor. After driving over 100 miles the car drives like a new machine and there is zero hesitation. Since I needed the car to be cool while working on it I didn't get a chance to...
