try that first and the thermostat itself.... try all options before you attempt the heater core.

If you had no heat, then your heater core is probably dead... those are a MAJOR pita to replace.... you basically have to pull the entire dash out to get to the core... not a fun project.

you dont have to undo the ball joint to remove the axle... it comes out as a whole. Oh and since your already half way out with the ball joint, then you might as well go to an auto parts store and pay the 20 bux for a ball joint remover... its a 'U' shaped wedge that you hammer onto the ball...

sadly the mazda dealer parts are usually cheaper than the ford dealer parts. Hit up places like kcbhiw said, or you might try looking in your yellow pages for someone who has remanufactuered ones.... they are cheaper, and usually last almost as long as new parts.
