Slight rattle from below

I just recently had my Greddy SP2 Exhaust with the Hangman Exhaust Hangers installed. Its been about a week and now I am noticing a slight hollow sounding rattle resonating from below the vehicle. My installer warned me that I would probably experience a little rattle because in the area where the GReddy pipe with the two resonators sits, there is a heat shield above that he had to bend a bit to get the pipe to fit. Could this be the rattle I am experiencing? I notice it on cold starts and sometimes on turns when the road is a little uneven. Thanks!

I got a rattle when I put on my SP2 system. Those heat shields could be it. I loosened all of the bolts and adjusted it a bit. That seemed to help. The Greddy system are lighter than the stock pieces.

Did you put some new hangers on the cat/resonator pipe as well?

Yes I did. I had my Mazda Dealer install it all for me. The 10's went in front, while the 12's went in the back (muffler). The installer told me that the stock piping originally did not have an additional resonator and that area is now occupied by one; because of this, the heatshield in that area is awful close to that second resonator. I have an appointment this friday so that he could adjust the heatshield. Curse of the Mazdaspeed I tell you! I also have to have my custom alarm checked out. The alarm arms when I leave and upon return, will not disarm. Lots of bugs and fixes I have never encountered before on one car alone. Despite all of this, I am still loyal t my MSP.

Cool. I am also loyal to my MSP. There are many threads about bad alarms. All its some minor stuff. I am also running an Apex Downpipe. Its catless, so its much lighter than the stock piece. That heatshield does have close bend on it where the SP2 system goes.

Good luck.

Yeah, thought it was pretty comical for my alarm to have the ability to arm in a high traffic area, causing a funny scene when I had to disarm it and couldn't. As far as the heatshield goes, I am not sure if that is really what it is, but it sounds like a hollow metal vibration, and it is more pronounced when my car takes off from a start, or if I let off the throtle suddenly in 1st. I also notice it when my car is taking off and making sharp turns during that time...weird.

It could also be the mid pipe coming in contact with a frame support in the front. Some people have put a piece of rubber on it or added washers to the bolts to raise the piping.

Whatever it is, its more of an annoyance vs a real problem. Are you happy with the SP2 overall? I am totally satisfied. I put mine on before my downpipe and noticed a solid difference in peformance.

I actually am quite pleased with the exhaust. The sound is great and is not too annoyingly loud. It has that low GReddy growl that I wanted. I really wanted to steer clear of the loud coffee can shrill. In addition, after seeing pics of other MSPs here with the SP2 installed, the decision was pretty clear for me to get it; the SP2 looked like it had the cleanest installation and no bumper rubbing. Besides, I also have the GReddy TT; might as well complete the combo.

The one thing I am wondering is if anyone has dynoed this product yet and what amt of average horsepower increase (if any) could I expect. I don't have the downpipe and I am not sure I will get one just yet. I'm not too thrilled about messing with the cats just yet.

Anyhow, I will print this thread out and give it to my installer and he will check on those areas we discussed. It sounds like he is going to have to put the car on the lift and see if there are any parts that make contact. You are right, it is a nasty annoyance. Thanks for your help!

You aren't the only one with the rattling problem. I have a custom 3" turbo-back cat-less exhaust system with a Apexi N1 muffler and I have the same rattle you described. I've looked and looked for it with no luck. I removed the heat shield that was around the shifter and sprayed all the other ones with rubberized under coating and it still rattles. Really sounds like it is in my gas tank. I even went as far as taking my fuel pump out to look but couldn't get around the baffles. Please let me know if you find a fix for it, I could really use it. It is really annoying going through a parking lot in first with a great exhaust tone and then a loud ass rattle.

I have a rattle also. Its because the piping is not centered correctly on my car. Its off to the right a bit and when I hit bumps or something it hits the sides of the groove.

It gets really annoying at times. It actually sounds like I am dragging something on the street. Bah!

i get a rattling sound too... but i dont think mine is my exhaust.... it sounds more like a stray metal peice loose in the tranny... and only usually happens from 1st to 2nd shift, although it does happen other times...does anybody think it could by any chance be the exhaust.. mines a custom 2.25" catback/ no resonator???

I had my installer check that out, and low and behold...thats what it was. The solution was a small rubber piece with a clamp tightened on it on one of the upper muffler hanger to keep the muffler and piping from moving to the side. A slight bending of the heatshield directly above the second resonator also helped big time. It was a perfect solution IMO because it did not involve any cutting or fabricating. No more rattling noises. A big thanks to J.R. of Gateway Mazda in Aurora for his help and a big thanks to his crew as well for the great customer service.
