Complete Custom Turbo Setup

Ok, here's the deal. Instead of jumping out and spending 3-4k right away in a lump sum, I want to easy into the Darkside. I have recently gotten some hookups in my hometown for about anything I need for my turbo setup.

I want to run a non -intercooled (for now), low boost (2-4 psi), turbo setup on my MP3. Then as time passed i'll upgrade everything from intercooler, to etc.

I'm curious to what turbo's you'd suggest and sizes, etc that you think stock internals could handle up to 7-9 psi later and then later after replacing pistons, etc go to around 15 psi (track only).

I like the T3 ball bearing, just from experience, but i figured I'd throw out a post and see what people say here. Trust you all!!!

And what would i all need for the low 2-4 psi boost stage 1 setup?

my recomendation...is get a manifold from Hiboost/wagner/flyinprotege. Do no bother re-inventing that component.

Everything else....you can source new or used (lines, piping, FMU, etc.)

I would strongly suggest Hiboost...Cast Iron, tubular design, good flow, thick and solid, holds in temperatures, SOLID (virtually resistant to warping), desgined to expand with heat, has the EGR fitting built in (no weld of the EGR tube or removing it).

Hiboost can ship you a manifold for the IHI turbo or the T3 series.

But in general...get it from one of the established supporters of this forum.

That was my plan, I wasn't positive if they'd sell just the manifold.

I like HiBoost as well, if i was going full kit right now thats where i'd shop! :) Very impressed w/ them.

Which turbo would u recommend the IHI or T3 and what sizes, or is the hiboost manifold for only 1 size, 60 probably.

if you are going to go...low cost.....there are plenty of turbos available on ebay. I picked up a MINT t25 turbo...for $150 CAD.

For your application...if you want to start small and dont want to start with an Intercooler.... go with a smaller turbo....a t25 would be perfect. a T3 (smaller size) at the very most (just like Spools Stage 1 kit)

Talk to Juan directly...but I remember that he posted that he sells the manifolds be themselves...in 2 flavours...T3 flange or IHI flange (maybe the t25 flange)

I might just do the ebay thing, or talk to some friends that have a salvage yard, i might just find a used t25 or some eclipse or something. ;)

I'll do that. Thanks.

Any suggestions on a computer like a Haltech, or shouldn't i worry until I get up into higher PSI?

EDIT:

Should i go external or internal wastegate?

They can't be bad......if Spool uses them......they must have some value to them. I am in no means an expert with this type of technology.

Which Vortech FMU did spool have w/ his kit? 10:1 8:1 ?

Or would it just be better since i will be going higher boost later to a fully setting one like the Vortech SFMU or the BEGI?

Their value is they're cheap.

If you're asking for experience, I'm giving you mine. I've used both, the Vortech unit is worthless IMHO.

Spend the extra money for a quality part.

t25 will produce more heat then a t3, probably a bad idea without intercooler.

Get the BEGI FMU over the Vortech. Much more adjustability. The Spool kit came with a 12:1 Vortech FMU, changing the rate meant getting new "discs" for the FMU which is a pain and can only be 4:1 to 12:1 in 2:1 increments. So, no 9:1 (except they now sell 3:1 and 7:1 for $30.95 each).

Even at low PSI?

I'll probable go with the BEGI or the SFMU from Vortech since the 'Super' one is adjustable, but in the end probable BEGI because its cheaper and history proven, as also to everyone's experience here with the BEGI one. :)

FYI wagner sells a non intercooled kit for 2450$ that bolts up to the stock exhaust and can be upgraded later to an intercooled kit. Cant really beat that price, even piecing a kit together cant be to much cheaper, plus you get all new stuff.
I think i go cheaper since I can mix used and new. Yes all brand new is sweet, but with TLC anything works for me for the right $$$.

I am already going the same route. If you need a manifold click the link in my sig for the stage 2 manifold. I have already purchased almost everything and I just put a deposit on my intercooler. If you have questions let me know. I am running a T3 also.

Nice site! Best prices on a new turbo manifold yet! Thus some cutting and welding, but thats nothing really. My work, not $$$, thats my motto.

I might go salvaging around for a used T3, the T25 came stock on the Eclipse and Talon turboed engines right?

What are the only vehicle specific parts on a turbo setup?

Not like FMIC piping, cause that you can have made fairly reasonable prices.

Like the Turbo Manifold, etc.

Pretty much just the manifold. Everyhting else can be adapted, unless you go the ECU route, then that's specific.
