Opinions on rallycross with the MSP

Talking to me? Well hell yeah its the same car. The MSP will never be a trailer queen. Its more like my little motorsports *****. Turning tricks to my abusive pimp needs.

Well I meant the people who have done rallycross. What I hear is that you often break stuff. :p

My RX-7 was on a trailer the last two times I went, as it's sort of lacking emissions equipment. I just do it to save headaches if I do break something. =)

As a side note, however, I don't do club racing, or the type of SCCA ProRally/ClubRally that lurch does. =) I race up in Maine, on a private woods course with a small group of enthusiasts. Club/ProRally is WAY too expensive for me, as of yet. Hehe.

No reason to trailer. Heck I know people who used to drive their rally cars to ProRallies in the 80's. Hard core.

You are only running for about 5 minutes at a rallycross. I would hope you can keep from breaking something in that span of time. :)

i think rallycrossing sounds great.. what about the dirt/gravel/rocks though? Should i kiss my nice unscratched paint finish goodbye after a rallycross? :)

Rally-X in a MP5

I just did rallyx for the first time. here in the California Rally Series there are 6 classes. 2WD-Street Stock/Street Modified/Rally and the same for 4WD. I raced in the 2WD street modified, my first ever competitive racing event tarmac or loose surface. some things i learned:

1. make sure you have a spare tire because you will probably get a flat. and bring a floor jack and jackstands

2. use cheap tires that don't wear out quickly. i had kuhmo ecsta's and spun them bald in less than 3 miles of racing :(

3. DON'T E-brake if you want to be competitive. learn to left foot brake.

4. don't be scared of breaking your car or you won't have much fun. (if you are afraid, rent one...! there was a girl this weekend that did just that and she won her 2WD street stock class, a HIGHLY competitive class)

5. don't get intimidate by turbo charged cars. most of the kids with them can barely drive. RallyX is about the driver!

6. Have fun!!!!! There is a mutual respect amongst everyone that chooses to rally their car.

7. ask for a ride in a fast drivers car. most people without someone in the passenger seat will gladly say yes. i got the ride of my life in an STI.

there's a million things i learned this weekend, but i know that rallyx is the funnest sh!t ever!!!!

i'll have some pics and video of the P5 in action in the next day or two.

Does a stock MSP have enough ground clearance for Rallycross?

My LX is on Eibach Pro-kit springs, Tokico Blue shocks. Would that work, or would I be asking for destruction?

i rally crossed my MP5 this weekend it has about a 2" drop (tokico hp's and goldline springs) and 17x7 rims with 215/45 tires and had no problrems except for breaking the tire bead and filling the rim with dirt. i would reccomend bringing at least 1 full size spare. check out the course and use your judgement. you should be alright.

isn't a 45 series tire really low profile for rallying? i would think you'd want something more for various reasons, including the one you mentioned, and if you watch all the pro rallys they have pretty beefy sidewalls. if i went rallying i'd use my winter tires, a 15" wheel and i think a 60 series tire

i think most rally courses are relatively smooth as long as you stay on the road, so i wouldn't worry a whole lot about ground clearance. the wheels do need to travel a bit though, so you need to make sure they can still do that

my point was that i had the worst case scenario for rally-x and still went and did it and managed to win the 2WD Street Modified class.

rally tires and sizes

First, get a set of 15" steel wheels from TireRack. (about $40 ea). Then buy some used 15" rally tires from one of the rallyists in your area ($10-50 ea. depending on how spent). An alternative is Nokian Hakka 10s. Will be a good winter tire and work for rallycross, but not a real great sidewall for dirt like the rally tires. Then pull the fuse for ABS. ABS goes against every fiber of my being for performance driving on loose surfaces. The Progege with stock master cyl. responds EXTREMELY well to LFB. Practice it. Just remember, the right foot (throttle) controls the front end of the car and the left foot (brake) controls the back.

Good luck and have fun!

what size/brand rally tires will fit 15" steel wheels on my 02 protege5?

Silverstone 525s will fit in size 15/62-15. The 16/64s will fit on the front, but might rub on the rear. You don't need that much tire for 2wd rallycross at <200hp anyway.

Kumho R700s should fit in size 195/65 QR15. They are only available in the hard compound, which should be fine for rallycross and actually preferrable if you are driving to the events...the mediums would wear out on the highway. These are non-directional, so when the knobs get rounded in one direction, you can swap sides and have sharp edges again. The Silverstones are directional and, while you can do the same, they might be a little squirrelly run backwards.

Hankook is now making rally tires too. I have yet to test them, but will keep you updated. They have 3 patterns and they look promising. I'm sure they'd be great for rallycrossing. I need to test for rallying though. They will be out shortly.

The other options are Michelins, Pirellis and Falkens. I haven't tried Falkens. Michelins and Pirellis are better tires for rallying, but the advantages won't be seen in your car at a rallycross. And they cost much more. Still, they are available used from many rallyists around the country. You can often buy them half worn out for very cheap. If you invest in a GOOD groover, you can bring even more life back to them by sharpening the edges and opening up the tread (as rallycross courses tend to get pretty soft).
