Hi all,
I recently purchased a 2021 Mazda CX-5 and was looking at cargo trays. I have done some research on various options and settled on the OEM cargo tray. I am sharing my thoughts and lots of pictures below. I hope this will help people make an informed decision (despite this being an older vehicle) as I personally had trouble finding good videos and/or pictures online to help me decide.
Here are my notes on the 2017~2021 Mazda CX-5 Cargo Tray (0000-8B-R23).
Advantages
Cut-out for the cargo securing loops:
Not a perfectly form-fitting tray (sharp corner in a round spot):
Coverage for the cargo sub-compartments:
With the rear seatbacks folded:
Gap between the folded rear seatbacks and the tray:
Height of the cargo tray relative to the trunk rear:
Underside of the cargo tray:
Underside of the cargo tray and rivets for the CX-5 name plate:
Model number on the underside:
Height of the cargo tray lip (~1.9 cm):
Height of the cargo tray lip (~11/16-inch):
Hope that helps!

Here are my notes on the 2017~2021 Mazda CX-5 Cargo Tray (0000-8B-R23).
Advantages
- Non-slip, thick, rubberized material, which is great for keeping things from sliding around
- Easy to clean
- Precise cut-outs for the cargo securing loops
- CX-5 logo for showing off that CX-5 pride
- Price is reasonable
- Availability was also a consideration as I live near the Mazda Shop by Scarboro Mazda who was able to order one from the Toronto warehouse (about 15 left at the time of this writing despite showing as "sold out" online)
- Not perfectly form-fitting (see pictures below)
- Rubberized material can also make it harder to slide heavy things in and out
- No seatback covers like WeatherTech's SeatBack Cargo Liner HP, TuxMat's SuperTrunk, or powoq's Rear Backrest Mat+Rear Cargo Mat
- Non-slip nibs might dig little holes in the carpet after prolonged use (see pictures of nibs below)
- Cargo tray lip is a bit short compared to higher-end alternatives (see pictures below)
- TuxMat SuperTrunk
- Cost is fantastic for what you get
- Extremely well form-fitted and has a very high cargo tray height
- Awesome coverage over the plastic front of the cargo area
- Comes with back seat covers that attach via hook-and-loop fasteners (Velcro) (no adhesives needed)
- However, lots of reviews online that TuxMat is very slippery for cargo, but is great (if not the best) for front and rear floorliners
- WeatherTech SeatBack Cargo Liner HP
- Non-slip, thick, rubberized material
- However, the accordion flaps may interfere with cargo or appear unsightly
- Some videos online suggest the seatback covers are attached with an adhesive over hook-and-loop fasteners (Velcro), which is not ideal and may leave residue or destroy the fabric at those spots
- The cargo tray lip may also deform over time, especially after brushing against cargo entering the trunk
- Cost is very high
- powoq's Rear Backrest Mat+Rear Cargo Mat
- Good alternative, but looks a bit slippery from pictures (I did not experience them directly)
- Having an option for seatback covers is awesome
- Seatback covers are attached with hook-and-loop fasteners (Velcro) (no adhesives needed)
- The cut-outs for the cargo securing loops and child seat anchor brackets need to be manually cut, which might not look very clean and break over time
- 3D MAXpider Cargo Custom Fit All-Weather Floor Mat
- Good alternative, but looks a bit slippery from pictures (I did not experience them directly)
- No seatback covers option
- The anti-skid backing made of fibres looks a little prickly when taking the cargo mat out for cleaning
- Cost is high for an option without seatback covers
- Husky Liners Weatherbeater Cargo Liner
- Looks similar to the WeatherTech and powoq options, but does not ship to Canada
- Appears rubberized
- Appears easy to clean
- Cargo tray lip is slanted, which might reduce the cargo space
- This OEM cargo tray does not fit 2022+ CX-5 models due to the rails for supporting the dual-height cargo floor positions
