2016~2023 ATF oil cooler No 2

:
2018 CX-9 GT
discussing how CX-9 2016+ models outside of the US and Canada have an additional transmission oil cooler:
That is for the Australian version but they are almost identical (they have an extra oil cooler, but i think that is mostly it).
That is very interesting: do you know where that is located?
I am not sure exactly where i originally found the info, but digging back into it there is a hint in the AC condenser TSB, stating that US and Canada are « without ATF oil cooler #2 » and mexico are « with ATF oil cooler #2 »

Digging in the Australian workshop manual it looks like oil cooler #2 maybe either a different fan and radiator, or an extra one, most likely mounted up front. (Item #19)

For all of the turbo car setups the coolant that is sent to the exchanger comes from the cylinder head and it bypasses the thermostat. That has the benefit of getting the ATF up to temp quickly. The downside is you have the hottest coolant in the engine going down to the transmission and because the Sky auto does not generate a lot of heat on its own there is not a lot of heat being removed from the unit. The turbo transmissions will run quite a bit warmer than the NA version, again due to the extra heat that engine generates which is why its not uncommon to see ATF temps of 225+ for those models.

In hotter climates Mazda added a secondary exchanger in the radiator that will actively pull heat out of the unit since its been cooled from the radiator. The lower oil passage is for ATF out, the upper passages are for the fluid going back in and then dropped into the sump.

Most of the earlier cases have the ports fully machined and usable just have threaded plugs put in the spots, the 3 turbo, CX-30 and 50 do not have the ports.
