Yeah, I don't know how it fell off, but that is the only pipe down there that you could be talking about.

Maybe when he got rearended it put some for on the whole exhaust system by hitting the muffler, but I still don't know how those bolts would get worked loose.

he got backed into (hit from the front side)

and there wasnt a bolt point on the DP..... ive been searching for an underside pic of the car but cant find one for s***.... g/f has digital camera right now too... grr!

Hmmm, I understand your picture...but all I can offer you is still the same, I think the O2 sensor after the cat is reading something weird and it is causing the CEL and the engine to run wierd.

reset the PCM

IE unhook battery?

thanks for all the help guys.... gonna get up bright and early to do this (too dark to be doing stuff in the parking lot of steak n shake)

Mmmmm. Steak n Shake. God I miss that place.

Anyhow, best of luck to ya. Definitely too late and too cold to be working in a parking lot.

Yeah, step on the brake after it's disconnected to get all the juice out, and then let it chill while you hook the exhaust back up. Reconnect the battery after about 15 mins, and try to start it. If it fires up, let it idle for about 5 or so.

check the file below and read this....

where the arrow is, is EXACTLY where it is disconnected. Right after the "bulge"it connects back onto a pipe (looks to be crimped on and could easily be slid back on).

Only problem is its hung up on some larger sheet of metal that covers the bottom of the car (i guess the undercarriage protection piece). I went back up there to help try and place it back on but its not budging as its hung up on that piece of metal.

So should we take off the large undercarriage piece or try and remove the DP piece. Keep in mind at its current state we have no lift available but if we can simply get it off that piece it looks as if it'll fit right back on.

I have no idea what could have caused this.... now my friends worried that due to his mods (none exhaust related but the MBC and vaccum lines) that if he brings this to mazda they may tell him hes screwed.

heres the pic

Hrmmmm. Somebody correct me if I am wrong here, it's been awhile since I have seen that piece but I don't remember the exhaust coming apart where that arrow is. Is it broken, or is there a flange there that came apart???

I hear ya Zoom. I just had this piece in my hands last night when I was loading it into the Firechicken and I would have never thought that would come apart. I assumed it was welded. But, I suppose Mazda could have made it a cheap slide over and crimp job. If so that was stupid. But that would definitely explain the problem second O2 sensor won't see s***. All I can say is :wtf:

its not supposed to but it did..... theres pieces of pipe that fit into the cat piece and it seems the cat piece has come off of the pipe

Bastards. If you do have to take it to the shop yank off that MBC or they'll void him in no time.

When you first described it, I thought you were refering to the spring flange at the first piece of the DP. If it's broken there at the arrow, I would tell your friend to remove his BC and take into the dealer for a free fix. It will need to be welded, so he could take it to a muffler shop and have it welded for fairly cheap.

do you think without the weld we could drive it very long? We're about 2 miles down the road from a Midas

If you manage to get the exhaust somewhat pieced back together, and reset the computer it should make 2 miles.

Don't you have Mazda Roadside Assistance with your car? I think all Mazdas conme with it. Call for a tow to the dealer and take the MBC off in the meantime.

What happened is the exhaust disconnected, the 2nd O2 was not reading anything, so the PCM went into limp mode. That explains the no power issue. Once the PCM goes into limp mode, you cannot start it IIRC.

Regardless if you have a boost controller, hoses or whatever, as long as there are no exhaust mods, the dealer cant void your warranty. They could not cause the exhaust to break. :D
