Transporting stuff I don't want in the car

I think I have solved the problem of transporting stuff for my lawnmower, tractor and 4 wheeler that I don't want in the car. These are available commercially, but I wanted a smaller one. It is based on a WallMart "foot locker" and mounts in the 1 1/4 hitch receiver. I used 1.25 sq steel tubing .06 wall

Wow that's cheap! I'm going to have to buy one when I go camping (and not taking bikes). Are they usually in stock at their stores?

EDIT: aw man, it's class 3, i have class 2

Can't really say for certain about their in-store stock, it was even cheaper when I got it because of a coupon promo they had going on (49.99 I believe).

I need something similar when i need to take my lawn mower or snow blower for maintenance. I don't need a trailer, just something to haul something heavy and hard to lift into the back.

I note that the harbor freight unit is built in two parts with the 2 in. Tube in the middle. You could buy one and assemble it around a 1 1/4 in tube. It would require the tube (available from large hardware stores) and a drill and some work.

I built mine from scratch because I wanted small and light weight, and I wanted it covered.

You will also want to make sure nothing is sitting right where the exhaust flows out of the tailpipes. The one fdew made looks great. I had a friend a long time ago melt his bike tire/innertube when he put his bike on a rack in the back and the tire was right in line with his exhaust. You wouldn't want to melt a bungee or something and cause a mayhem moment...

I was considering this:

For $230, a full trailer...building a house I'm torn between the hitch rack like you guys have and the mini trailer. I figure I can prob sell the mini trailer for $150 later and it is a much more flexible unit (26 gal air compressor, etc can fit on there)

I've bought that exact trailer kit at Harbor. It takes a lot of work/time to build and put wood floor and fence. Much easier to just buy a used Haulmark at a good price ($1000) and flip it a year later breaking even with a quick sale when you are done. Haulmark and Pace keep their value. Beware there are many no-name badly built trailers out there.

Loading tools, air compressor, table saw, mitre saw etc will be harder with the walls/roof. I considered it. Maybe I'll check CL for a deal...

I haven't done any transporting with it yet so I can't say how big of an issue the heat will be, but I believe there's enough space between the exhaust and the rack.

You are probably right that you have enough room, but you could check pretty easily. Take that inexpensive plastic container strapped on to the rack for a ride around town (Empty, of course ;-). Then see if there are any heat marks.

I agree. You will get much more use out of the trailer. I use mine to haul wood, mulch, yard crap, tools, etc.. Also keeps things further away from my truck to avoid accidental dings.

Did you all get the factory installed hitch or did you install your own aftermarket? If aftermarket who from? Would want a 2" receiver. Thanks.

I've tried looking at all the "documentation" I received, but does anyone know the class of the factory hitch? It was on the car I bought, I didn't want one, so I hadn't researched it before.

Thanks...

If the square opening is 1-1/4" on each side, then it's Class II. If it's 2", then it's Class III. If you bought it brand new (looks like you have a 2015) then it's Class II.
