2003.5 Mazdaspeed Protege
I just bought an Mazdaspeed protege. I like the car, but I am kinda clueless as to what I have. I can tell there has been a lot of work done on the car. I noticed as soon as I got the car home that there was no air filter on it. I feel dumb for not seeing it before I paid for it, but it is to late and I got the car cheap.

Anyway, I know the car has a new fmic with a Maf relocation on it. My question is what kind of air intake system will fit with this system? I bought an AEM cai but it doesn't look like it will fit.... I have attached pictures

Any help would be appreciated. Also isn't information about what I got would be appreciated.

looks like your best option is going to be a mushroom style air filter. but by the looks of it you have a built engine looks like it has a doc b oil setup.

the position of that bov kinda sucks but you could probably build an intake with ebay piping and couplers.

this is what ive done with similar hardpipe setup.

ive actually got a 2.25" 45 down on the turbo with straight couper and a 2.25-3" coupler joining the 3" 45 to it. then whater 3" cone filter you like. thats a reative i got for free, but im due for a new filter pretty soon i think. my entire intake cost like $50. you will also want to drill a hole in the 3" pipe and reuse the groumet from the factory IAT sensor if you got the stock airbox.. if not.. well shold be able to find one that will work.

welcome to the club. enjoy the msp. its a fun car.

Awesome, thanks for the quick replies! I'll check out eBay and see what I can come up with on the piping.

You should be able to make a short ram with your AEM. That's basically what you will be doing with ebay parts and pieces. So save your money and just modify the AEM to make it work.

get a full size radiator, aluminum reservoir and slim fan it will make ur engine bay much cleaner

custom make a heat shield for the exhaust manifold or get a POPE exhaust manifold while its doing the GB

a Red Top or Yellow Top battery would be good too XD

It definitely has a Doc B setup. I wonder if it's on a built motor. Anyways everyone already gave out all the ideas I would.

That is definitely a custom FMIC setup, likely an ebay core and piping. I don't know what is going on with that remote oil filter setup and the huge filter, that does not seem necessary on a stock MSP. The VTCS and VICS solenoids on the intake manifold should be clipped to a bracket but they are hanging loose in the bay\ so both sets of intake flaps may be removed. Appears to be a TurboXS BOV, and the mazdaspeed heatshield and plastic engine cover are missing.

It's a screen, I run one on the 323. As long as you don't drive it in dirt roads or dirty roads it's fine. Unless it's a daily
