Can someone give me info on the bypass valve!

I just noticed that my 03 MSP is missing the air bypass valve that runs in between the intercooler hot pipe and the air intake tube. It just has a straight hose in place. Now I know that cant be good for it. What I need is maybe some photos to show where the vacuum line goes to on the engine from the valve. My car sounds like it has a bov on it and it doesn't so im concerned about it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I don't have a picture, but in stock form the vac line for the BPV was tee'd off the vac line that runs to the WGA. It goes from the backside of the TB to the WGA and the tee was right above the trans bell housing to block junction, pretty much in line with the oil cap. I suggest teeing off another vac line off the IM and leaving the WGA to it's own soley dedicated line. Understandable?

Here is a picture that shows nearly the stock location of the BPV and I wrote in where the tee would be abouts.

Thanks man thats a big help. I have a T there and its got a screw shoved into it to block it. You think that not having the bpv in place is causing harm?

Yeah you want something there to relieve that pressure when the Tb closes, if it is set up with just a tube there then you are just blowing pressurized air into the intake, way pointless. look into a forge bpv or another stocker. I can help with either if you're looking. Do you have hard pipes or stock plastic?

Sorry I didn't fully answer the question. Compressor surge will harm and decrease the life of your turbo and that is what is happening when you shift or release the throttle in boost without a relief valve.

I have stock plastic piping that already has been repaired with a metal insert and the metal nipple due to it cracking once before. I have looked at the Forge BOV and the BPV on protegegarage.com. Just not sure which to go with?

What are your plans for the car? Depending on that you can build your decision based on future goals. I think if you plan on staying on a mostly stock setup then you should go with a BPV to avoid stalling issues related with vta BOV. If you want to go with a BOV then look into getting hard pipes and relocating the MAF. If you go with hard pipes and you don't want to relocate then you can run a dual set up with both BPV and BOV and still skirt stalling issues. I ran that set up for a long time because the MAF relocation didn't work for me, but many others have had great success.

you should post a pic of you engine so we can see whats going on. you deff need some type of rcv or bov in there asap or....eventually you'll need a turbo.

If you dont have a bypass valve or BOV, just a straight piping connecting the hot to the intake, then how are you making boost? sounds fishy to me? do you have a boost gauge?

I think i stil have a forge BOV Sitting around if you wanna buy it. PM me if you're interested.

... i agree with the boost question... your car will feel like a beast after you fix this if it is the truth... post up an engine bay pic so we can take a look

These two pics were just taken. This is how I bought the car. I tried to get the best view of the hose where the BPV should be. And yes I do have a boost gauge and it's reading 7psi.

wow that is messed... because you are making pressure and pushing it into the IC not an open pipe to the intake... but that pipe... not so much.

yeah, not a good set up at all. I wonder if whoever was running a DIY pipe there with a BOV on it and just threw it back together like that when they sold it so they could hold onto that BOV for thier SR20 primered 240?

Ok I just bought the forge BPV. Probably take 2 weeks to arrive. Ill just take it real easy on her till it shows up.

Yea I had the feeling that the kid that traded it in took off a bunch of things, I mean it looks way to butchered up under the hood. It had 2 T-fittings in that one line and i recently replaced it with a solid piece when I installed my new wastegate actuator.

Ah that sucks. Should have asked if anyone had one kicking around. I ordered the actuator from Protege garage and they screwed it up and never sent it. Took 3 weeks, so hopfully they can try better this time.
