I'm beyond ******* pissed at this ******* point, and i need help bad. And dont tell me to reload or update windows, I already have. I have also defragged, and ran full virus scans. Note: I work almost exclusively from windows explorer rather than the stupid menus.

Here is my system:

Winblows XP Pro
Athlon XP 1800
512MB DDR2400 Ram
(2) Seagate Cheetah UW SCSI 10k RPM HDs
ATI Radeon 7500
UltraPlex 40x SCSI CDROM
Memorex 52x CDRW

Here is the problem:

Intermittently (i havent isolated when exactly the problem occurs)
ill be in windows explorer and when i do ANYTHING (including right clicking, delteing, opening, etc) with FILES (not folders) the computer takes between 30s-1min to open or even display the right-click menu. This is incredibly frustrating as you can imagine, especially if im trying to makes sigs or whatever. However, although i cant do s*** with FILES, i can do anything with the folders themselves :wtf:. This problem seems to be intermittent about 75% of the time (when i started this paragraph it was ok, now its not).

I have my computer hooked to my laptop, and both are connected to a firewalled internet connection. This problem NEVER occurs on the laptop. THis problem occurs sometimes when the laptop is on or off, and sometimes when its connected or not.

Where it gets wierd is, I'll attempt to open a picture in a folder. It will take around 30-45s to open. I get no errors, just takes forever. Once it opens, for about 30s I can open or do whatever to any files, then it goes back to taking forever. Then this process just repeats. My CPU usage is not maxed out during the wait, its around 2%, then it will spike to somewhere close to but less than 50% and open the file. And my net connection works perfectly.

:wtf:

I have tried everything i know, including removing most of my programs, reinstalling windows, updating windows, defraggin the hard drives, running a full virus scan with updated definiations, searching for adware progs and whatnot, and rebooting like a mofo. I thought this might have something to do with the network, like my computer was scanning the network everytime it tried to open a file, but unplugging the laptop or shutting it off made no difference.

Also, if i open photoshop and open a file from within photoshop, i have no troubles whatsoever. same with if i open media player and open a mp3 from within the prog, no problems there. but if i try to open the same exact file from explorer, here comes the problem.

Surely someone knows the solution to this problem without telling me to format my hard drive (again).

hmm how about getting a new pc?...hah i had to be the asshole that said but what if you dont use windows explorer and just do it the old fashion way..(through my computer) also have you added any new hardware on the pc that might be causing glitch?

No new hardware. This pc is fast enough i shouldnt need a new pc. My computer / Windows Explorer = same exact thing, different look.

i have the almost the same setup as you, and mine does this right after boot up. I have a amd athlon xp 1800, 512 megs ram, ATI radeon 8500le, two hds, both are maxtor, one 80 gig, one 40 gig. I havent figured it out either

Also, I experience similar activity when I have a cd in my cdrom and I click on my computer. Takes for ever to open up. Sometimes it even locked up.

(bf1942 cd to be exact)

So do you have anything in the cdrom? If so, try the same thing with nothing it it.

well i was having alot of problems with xp pro so intalled win2k sp3, everything is so smooth....i should have gotten a mac

ok i rebooted in safe mode, no problems at all for a whole minute that i found random files and clicked on.

so i started up msconfig and removed ALL startup items. reboot, same thing happens. something is loading that is ****** up...wtf?

no i have nothing in either of the CD drives. and i know what oyu mean about that, yea it takes an extra couple seconds, but im talkin like 30 or more here.

here is a screen shot of my task manager.

and you have always had this problem or is something recent? is your antivirus always running?

this just started occuring this morning. i installed my antivirus afterwards for the specific reason of checking for viruses related to this problem, because i hate AV programs, they do more harm than good. i havent installed anything new this morning, or did anything out of the ordinary. i noticed the problem when i was trying to finish pro5mans sig.

Have you tried ending the nav processes? It might be scanning files on open, run, delete, copy, create, etc...

Any mapped drives or printers no longer available? If you don't have a problem in Safe mode that means you probably have a device that is no longer attached or working properly. I would check all peripherals and maybe check the health of your disks in Disk Management. Also, probably check device manager for any items not working. Hard to say without being in front of your pc.

ok ive narrowed it down. i rebooted in safe mode, no problem. i rebooted in safe mode with network support, there is the problem again. i reboot normally, and disable the network connection (which eliminates my connect to the net) and no problem. enable it, and theres the problem again. someone tell me what the **** is up?

Are you mapping any network drives? Have you recently referenced files on the other PC (laptop). XP also indexes files from other PC's connected. From Windows Explorer, XP will index recently accessed files across your network. I usually turn "off" file indexing because it is a waste of CPU time.

tell me how to turn it off?

ive uninstalled and re-installed my adapter card, and thought i got rid of all references on this computer to my laptop

i dont have file indexing on my second hard drive because its FAT32 (im assuming) but i turned it off on my root drive, no luck still.

come on guys im really desperate here. as of right now the only way i can view files normally is to disable my "local area connection"
