1977 Toyota Celica GT: Any words of wisdom?

I figure this would be the right place to post this. Anyway, here's the deal.
This car has been in my family since it was brand spakin new. The body's in decent shape as far as I know. It hasn't been driven in a number of years however, and from all reports it has a tendency to 'backfire' every so often. My grandparents got it for my dad when he went to college, and it was passed on to his sisters. Currently, my Aunt and Uncle need to get rid of it as it's taking up space in the garage. It's spent it's entire life in Miami Florida, and has been garage kept at my grandmother's house ever since I can remember. They're getting rid of it, and I'd hate to let it go unless there's some really compelling reason that I should run and hide (tendency to explode, etc). I'd probably have to drive it from Miami to Atlanta, so... that should make it interesting hahaha.

Obviously, it'll need some maintenance at this point. How easy are they to work on? Anything a potential owner should look for? Does it have disk or drum brakes? I know it's got manual steering, which is ok.

It's one of those "I remember riding around in this cool little orange car when I was a kid and I'd hate to let it go to who knows who" type of deals.

looks just like this:

Any thoughts? :)

those things are awesome.. you can have a lot of fun with it!

my buddy ted in high school had one.. it seemed pretty easy to work on.

Well, yeah...KEEP IT!!!

My sis's hubby had one and loved it. They're pretty easy to work on too. :)

dude, that thing looks too cool to just let it go to some moron....but wait, if you take it, that wont solve that problem...

lol :p

I cant imagine its too much of a pain in the ass to work on tho...

My sis and I were both Celica people. This is my 78 I had - think the pic is from 1987 or 1988. Did the paint in Porsche Guards red. I loved that car. Rebuilt it around 150k, then sold it at 300k to one of my Hobby Shop customers. I saw the kid driving around in it for a couple years after that and then I think he took it with him to college.

I love the body style of the 77 though. Much sportier!

Wow..that's in awesome shape. Please don't let some dumbass get his hands on it and drive it into the ground. She's a keeper and should be treated nicely in her golden years. :-) Very easy to work on, and when problems to arise, they're cheap and easy to fix. Longitudinal-mounted engines FTW.

the pic I posted isn't the actual car, it's one I found on the web lol. But yeah, it's not in terrible shape body wise. My brother and I have both talked about snatching it up if we ever get the chance. Looks like we may be getting that chance :D

Do it. Do it.

You can learn the joys of carbination. Also, single guy, three cars? What are you, Kevin, now?

My Popz bought one new back in the mid-70's and he always speaks well of it...it never let him down...You know...Older Japanese cars are starting to get some of that "classic car" chique...Keep it! (drive)

I'd ditch the carb for a later EFI engine with MS added :)

And what's wrong with more than 3 cars? As long as at least 1 of them is running, you're golden :p

The car's been in Miami since new, and I'm going to send it to the rust-belt. Right.... :p

I'm actually thinking about buying a friends 1967 Volvo P1800 .... i think I'm a glutton for punishment.
