hey guys this is for those who have or have had the RacingBeat cat back,,, i had mine for lil over 2 yrs now, and i loved it (key word "loved it") sounded so nice but thats not anymore, now it sounds raspy/ratling, like many cheap civics, it sounds so ugly i'm almost ashamed to drive my car, and the thing is it keeps getting worse, in the start it was only a bit, but now :( .. could it be that my mufler is blown? or sumthing else.... i checked to make sure that everything was tight and it checked out.... thx for help

oh and btw it only seems to be worst at low/mid RPMs, at higher RPMs cant rlly hear it.....

peace alex

Try removing the axle back portion and start the engine. It will be LOUD, but the rattling might go away. Then you might be able to shake the muffler and see if anything is loose.

Does your exhaust tip have that double shroud thing? Is that messed up?

Yeah, this is often the fate of aftermarket exhausts; my Magnaflow has ROASTED it's packing, only a couple years after install. It doesn't 'buzz' perse, but it has a kinda fart-canny sound. Not too loud, still, thankfully. My Mazdaspeed before this did the same, and a Nismo pipe on a friend's Spec V... It, unfortunately, gets burned out really quick, especially if you have a header. I have a header, and one cat, at this point, and it still gets pretty cooked in short order. I was kind of thinking of getting a Racing Beat as my next one, in the hopes that it'd be better suited to long-term usage, but meh. I may just go totally crazy and custom make the whole exhaust myself.

Well, if nothing else, you've got some quality piping up ahead of the RB muffler. Cut the muffler off and put a new muffler on and call it good.

The OP also has a catless mid-pipe.

yah i was thinkin of doing that, removing the axle back and see what happens,... yeah i'm running catless, and i was told by my friends that on rare ocassion they've seen a small flame when i reved or WOT....

eek now I am scared for my car..I am running no tsudo headers-catless midpipe-rb exhaust. subbing for more info.

I had the same problem at about 2300rpm, it would make a loud buzzing noise. I took it to my local exhaust shop and they told me it was a blown baffle in the muffler and they were 100% sure. I was supposed to take it in today and have my new magnaflow muffler and resonator installed, but there is a huge ice storm going on(pissed) I'll let you guys know if that was the prob when I take it in.

thx yeah let us know mayn...... also i have a bit of info that might shed sum light.... first i took it out for a test run in a quiet area so i can hear my exhaust real good, the raspy/buzzing/ratlling sound is loudest at the take off (either normal or agressive take off) and its worst at low rpm (it starts at about 2000) at higher rpm its there but only at lower speeds, once i reach higher speed 30+ or so (couldnt go any faster in the area), and gun it, it sounds much better..... went home and i jacked up the rear in hope to see if i can find/hear anything... i left the car runnin and got underneath, the raspy/buzzing noise seems to be coming from the muffler for sure (the rattling seems to be coming from sumplace else on the exhaust, gota check the bolts) one thing i did find is, well there's a small hole on the back of the muffler (maybe 3mm wide) its close to the welding point that supports the muffler (so its hard to see, see the attached pic).. i coverd the hole with my finger ( lol ) while i had my dad give it sum gas, it helped a bit, but still my exhaust note was awful, i'm guessing that the main problem is inside (somethin got blown within) ...... I'm gona try contacting RB to see if theres maybe warrenty? (even tho its been 2 yrs) ......... one more thing i still wana do b4 i decide, is to take off the axle back and see if i notice anything than, even tho its gona be hard to tell with it being so loud....

on the pic its hard to see the hole since its so small and the muffler is dirty

The hole could have let moisture and possible salt enter the muffler, corroding the metal structure inside, which would cause the metallic rattle/buzz....the hole alone would only make the exhaust louder, and only slightly louder at that point...I would guess the muffler is corrroding from the inside out...

Good luck

yeah for sure, tho even with the lil hole covered it still sounds raspy/buzzing...... hmm its kinda funny cuz all this happening now (and i've been thinkin for the last 2-3 moths about corksport PS exhaust lol, maybe its a sign to get it hah)

thx for all the input guys

Just got the new muffler on, sounds great! No more buzzing/raspiness. It was deffinately a broken baffle in the old muffler. With the resonator installed it doesnt have that ricey sound anymore either (although the resonator restricted some exhaust flow im sure). I'll bet if you replace just the muffler you'll be in good shape, also check your heat shield, it may be bent or have a few loose bolts.

awesome thx mayn .... now i gota see if RB will respond to my email with good news, in mean time i'll start lookin for RB axle back... i've checked the heat shield few times but i'll do it again when i take of the axle back, better safe than srry

peace

Yaaay, resolution. =) Congrats guys! My sound is just a nature of having rather high compression in conjunction with a very open exhaust. And a crazy driver, of course. ;)

i've had mine now for about 4 yrs, just starting to get lowed and about 4k...at lower rpms it's fine....4 yrs and about 90k miles, not bad....does rb still make them?

i think they do,..... i got an email from them, they need to determine what my problem is and if its covered in warrenty .... (fingers crossed)

Does anybody think that seafoaming a car will cause the baffle to wear out...i swear I am experience all the problems in this thread on my Racing Beat only a few hours after seafoaming it. I feel embarrassed to drive this loud machine.

i did the seafoam too but a good 6-8k miles ago... i'm waiting to hear back from the RB guys, they already replyed once asking for more info and a pic, i emailed them back....
