2008 Mazda5 5MT Sport w/ Popular Package
I wanted to share with you some pics I took while traveling to the old continent recently. Mazda did not pay a cent for the trip nor Im a Mazda5 freak, yet one day I was soooo bored I decided to find out how these things look in Europe so stopped by at the stealership. Nothing special that we dont know already, of course. Our MZ5 fellows from the Netherlands may be able to add more details if needed.

Some quick notes:
  • It is great to visit a stealership when you dont have any local language skills. How can they bug you? :D. Great guys though, they just let me wander around, no problem
  • I finally got to see the silver color which is not sold in NA. I like it but I would still prefer the one here though
  • The 7th seat is nicely designed but is a joke to want to seat an adult in there
  • I like the little trays for the 2nd row, but unless you are a 3-9yr old kid, I dont see you fitting adult stuff in there (nor your legs)
  • 6th speed for the Diesel. With autobahn speeds, Mazda should consider it for non-diesel models as well :D
  • High intensity red light in the back (under the bumper). It seems to be obligatory in Europe. For foggy days (where I live) it should be a good thing to have.
  • There was one dark purple model around, Would that be the dark plum mica?
  • No ATs, purely MTs around (Diesel and Gas) (nana)
  • The headlight bezels in the front are fully chromed (i.e no yellow reflectors). I like the NA models better
  • No 17in wheels there. No sporty fronts, black/gray bezel tailights nor sidesills. As I understood, those can be available but only under special order. The 16in wheel design seems to be the same as our Canadian fellows get up north.
  • I'm not a big fan of tinted windows on the MZ5, but the OEM do not look bad

I also took a couple of pics at some competitors of the MZ5. Im not sure if competitor is the right word, but they look so much alike to me. The Zafira from Opel (Mexico sells it under the Chevy badge) and the Touran from VW. There are tons of other similar models, but hey, I was not that boooored to picture them (screwy)

At least this confirms that MZ5 IS NOT really in the Minivan segment, more of a Space Station Wagon segment if you like (or MPV as they call it, i.e. 4 people including 2 small kids). They LOVE station wagons and MAVs there. I saw more MZ5s in 2 weeks than I have seen around my area since 2005 ;)

Two few questions:

1. I always thought rear fog light should be on the driver side.
2. They actually selling a GM converted full-sized van?

BTW, I like the airplane-style pulllout trays.

Nice shots! and those nice roof racks again!(pissed)

In my neck of the woods there are a few cars brought over from Europe wearing diplomatic license plates. One of them was a 1st gen Premacy which I saw regularly when taking my oldest kid to preschool.

And the young woman driving the red Opel Tigra I would see on the way to work? Yeah, I was, uh, checking out her car...

1. I've seen them in some European cars around here usually as part of the driver side taillight (BMW, Saab, VW, Volvo), yet in some cases these actually come in both sides. Now, although is wired, in many instances the lightbulb is not usually installed for NA as is not mandatory. I'm assuming this is to save $$ during production. In the new MZ5 model case I'm assuming that its taillights are not large enough to hold a rear fog light, hence they put it under the bumper.

2. The closest I saw to an American minivan is the Caravan, which is sold there. I also saw an old Pontiac (?) Trans-Sport. IMO problems to sell those there are the gas prices (Gas is ~$1.72USD a liter, meaning ~$6.8USD per US Gallon). Kee-Ching!!! (confused). The only GM non-commercial van seems to be the one I pictured above.

Oh yes, thanks starlightmica (uhm), I forgot to mention that even the most basic model seems to have them OEM. See the 4th pic. The black MZ5 to the left is the most basic diesel model (even the wheels are 15in it seems) and already has them :(

Fog Light location

If there is only one rear foglight, it is on the driver's side. The driver doesn't always sit on the same side of the car.

My American spec Saab had the foglight on the left side, whilst my UK friends had it on the right (or as they would say, "correct" side).(beer)

the rear fog light either has to be closest to the opposite traffic or the center
they *are* required in europe and some other countries
