oem Air intake scoop small?

Just when you pop the hood there is a air scoop about 8 inches wide by 1 1/2tall adjacent to the drivers side headlights shouldn't this car be sucking up more air? And wouldn't the air from the engine come in when stopping at a red light.

If you let more air in by lets say fabricating a wider air induction scoop would this benefit the car? Would you gain some HP?

The scoop you see there is just to help cool the external working parts of the engine. Underhood temps can get extreme...will it aid in H.P. to install a fan or maybe enlarge the scoop? I don't think so.

Good observation and question though. I have often thought of having louvers installed on my Acura...you open the hood on that thing on a hot day and it singes off your eybrows!

Isn't cold air intake connected to this same box? isn't the purpose of a cold air intake to increase airflow thru this same section? or am I wrong.
just trying to understand these things

To be honest I am not positive but the air box gets its air from underneath the air box.

Oh and for what its worth I think that is a pic of a CX-9 underhood.

That is a CX-9, but the -7 has a similar device. It is indeed a "cold air intake" for the engine--from the scoop, incoming air goes through a duct, down to the bottom of the air box, then up through the filter into the engine. When the vehicle is in motion, the air coming in through this is much cooler than it would be if drawn from under the hood, producing a bit more power; sitting at a red light, who cares? You don't need the extra power.

Not to pick, but the posted pic is definitely a CX-7 engine. :)

The big hint is the intercooler assembly and oil change access cover.

Here is a CX-9 engine, BTW.

As for the cold air intake, the CX-7 stock unit is that, but is still restrictive. An after market unit will get you about 8 to 9 horsepower. The stock one is designed for sound regulations. I believe a 65 mph pass or the car at WOT should not exceed 86 db, if I recall correctly.

D'oh! I hate being wrong. I was looking at the headlights, and they didn't look "right." TMA (cheers)

Still, the aftermarket CAI seem to get the air from below the vehicle; I can't help but worry about water ingestion. A fairly remote possibility, given the -7's height, but still...
