question about Mazdaspeed 3 stock piston

:
2003 Mazdaspeed Protege NR2052
I took some pictures at Zoom Zoom Live in Chicago, IL, and I have a question about the piston i saw in the engine cutaway they had. It has a black spot in the center of the sidewall of the piston? I was wondering if somebody could tell me what it is, and it's purpose? I've uploaded some pictures to show what i'm talking about.
Thanks ahead of time,
Tim

Coated Skirt to reduce scoring the cylinder,

Works like the Razor "Smooth Strip" that you used daily..

It's a way to improve the stability of the piston during movement without having to make the piston so close, that it causes problems.

I saw the cutaway at ZZL in Houston. Pretty cool but a little rusty. Anyway, did you get a shot of the tiny turbo? I'd love to have that for desktop wallpaper or maybe an avatar.

tiny turbo

here are some pictures I took of the turbo. a few are cutaways.

Thanks! I get a bizarre thrill out of looking at the guts of this stuff. I suppose it allows me to pretend I understand how it all works.

It's as simple as it gets...

A Turbine
A Compressor
A Bearing

Oh, enlightenment! Sorry, I didn't mean to sound that mechanically naive. I don't mean the function of the big pieces, I mean every intricate detail revealed by the cutaway as well as the whole device. Any mechanical device, not just a turbo.
