I'm considering installing an oil filter relocation kit. Has anyone done this and have pics of the finished job?

If you're going to the hassle of relocating the oil filter, you might as well get a bypass filtration kit, otherwise it's a lot of effort just for a little added convenience.

all that means is that a lot of pain, frustration, and anger went into installing it

If the results come out the same , I would be happy no matter how many knuckles got scraped.

Hey that's my setup! Yes it was a lot of time and effort in the install, but it makes things so easy. I've changed it a little since then. I got a different relocation kit and it doesn't look as neat, but it's a little more versatile with extra ports for an oil cooler if I ever needed it. I got the kit pictured from Ebay. It had a small little leak that took some time to fix, but it wasn't too bad. Just needed more teflon tape.

I have a simmilar set up on my car, except it is infact a bypass filtration system. I will try to post pics soon. The whole thing cost about 300 bucks and I dont have to change my oil as often. Adding the system also added about 1.5 quarts of oil. I used to have it on my cavalier and I would consistently go over 20,000 miles on an oil change. (three times-before I took it off to put on my P5) I am an amsoil dealer and can get the bypass kit for anyone who is interested. When I change the filters this winter I will be putting some larger ones on which will probably bump the total oil capacity to 6.5 qts

here are some pics the install was pretty straight forward, and the location is about the same as in the previos pics. Oil analysis is used to determine if the oil is still sutible for use or if the filters need to be changed. That is done twice a year.

so wait...you only change your oil twice a year!? I don't care HOW well you filter it, no amount of filtration will cure thermal breakdown...

what does the bypass filtration system actually do

The smaller filter is the full flow filter(The full flow I have filters 15 micron @ 98%), and it works just like the stock oil filter in the stock position. The larger filter is the Bypass filter and it only filters a small fraction of the oil voulme that the full flow filter does in the same time period. This means that the pore sizes in that filter can be much smaller since pressure drop is not a factor since the oil can still floe throught the full flow filter. There is a spring mechanism in the base plate that forces a small faction of oil flow throught the bypass filter. The bypass filter can filter down to 2 micron @ 98.7 % efficiency. So basically it extends your oil drain intervals( with use of synthetic oil), and keeps your oil/engine very clean while doing so. Like I said before I changed my oil 3 times in 70,000 miles on my 01 chevy cavalier before I took the system off to put on my new P5. It has other benefits as well like increased oil capacity and cooling.

actually once a year and if oil analysis says its ok maybe more. Of course im not racing my vehilce if I had a turboed/diesel or race vehicle the oil would be changed more frequently. Synthetics last longer that dino juice plus the key is oil analysis I'm not just blindly changing my oil once a year. The 3,000 mile oil change is dead people just need to be educated. Amsoil has been offering a 25,000 mile one year oil change for 30 years. My mom now drives my old 01 cavalier and it still doesnt use a drop of oil (we are talking the crappy 2.2L)
