Some thoughts on maintenance..

Just got done an oil change and tire rotation in the blazin' heat and while I'm chillin' in the A/C (cheers) I figured I put these up. I'm partial to Nissan/Infiniti's as I've been driving SR20DE powered cars for years and I'm basing my observations on what I'm used to.

First off, I was going to clean the EGR but stopped short because I don't have a rachet or wrench that'll fit down there and give me room to turn it. The early SR20's needed EGR cleanings fairly often and it was a snap. The valve is located pretty much right on top of the engine and you don't need any thing special/skinny to get to it. I'll need to stop at Sears and pick up a "skinny" rachet before I proceed with the EGR on the Pro5.

The oil filter location sucks on the Pro5 compared to what I'm used to, but the filler hole is in a nice spot and you don't need a funnel as long as you're careful. On a side note, years ago I had a 1983 Dodge Charger and the oil filter was on the front of the engine with nothing near it. That was the only good thing about the car.(hand)

The tire rotation went smoothly although I noted that because the lug nuts are sunken into the wheels I can't get my fat fingers in there very well, but I just have to do one nut at a time with the wrench. Every time I do a rotation I notice that the rear wheels "snug" on and it's a little un-nerving to be kicking the s*** out of the rear wheels to get them loose while the car is swaying on the jacks.

Anyway, hope everyone has a nice 4th!(drinks) (drunk)

Try putting some anti-siezing on the hubs of the wheels next time. Also, an oil filter wrench helps making filter changes less of PITA.

Just my thoughts :D

My rear wheels were plastered to the hub last night when I painted calipers. I was under the car beating on the tire with a hammer with both hands.

They just get in the way for me. There's not a whole lotta room down there.

or work at a shop where you have access to a lift;) but the location of the filter is very common for import I4's. only other location off the block would be on the other side, and the exhaust mani is in the way. i always lube the gasket and snug it down. crackes loose every time.

My wifes old Integra GSR was in the same place as the Pro5. The less I have to craw under the car, the better. It's not terrible, but like I said, I'm just used to sr20's....

Where would one get the relocater kit for the protege5? Also what are the costs / time put in for this?

After trying a few different oil filter wrenches and a strap wrench on my P5, I've found the best tool is a big-ass pair of channel lock pliers. That is if I can't get it off with my bare hand.

For the wheel sticking, as said earlier, just smear a little anti-seize compound on the face of the rotor.

the metal from the rotor and the rim oxidize and bind together. i've experienced this w/ all my other rides...some grease on both parts solves the problem.

I used to have and SR20DE powered 96 G20. I can definatly relate. Guess thats the price we pay for zoom-zoom

Nice. I'm currently driving a '95 G20t. It's an automatic, but the power compared to the Pro5 is just amazing. Don't get me wrong though, I love the Mazda. I just wish it had more "ass".

Im coming from at turbocharged NX2000 (GTi-R). What a difference. The NX was really easy to work on compared to the pro5. I still love the P5 even if its slow.

I guess the G20 Does pull a little harder and the ride was definatly smoother, but the P5's handling is so much more fun and it's way more tossable although the G was no slouch in the handling dept. Overall, I prefer my P5 though.

I was just reading your posts and I can relate. I had a 94 se-r before my mp5 I miss the power, all my tools miss the work ( Bad oil pump = oil pump replacement and head gasket, then, blown engine = JDM sr20, then, bad speed sensor = pulling apart the tranny, then, Bad clutch spring = dropping the tranny back out, then, i forget, brakes and usual stuff, then for sale sign.) Yeah I miss my nissan but now I have hobbies.

I drove a '91 SE-R from '94 to '00, then a '92 from '00 to '03, and now my beater is a '95 G20t. The biggest job I ever had to do was a steering rack in the '91. The Pep Boys rack promptly went bad in about 30 days. Other than that I had only minor problems and usual maintenance.

I'm currently looking for another '91 to tag as a classic vehicle and beat around on the weekends.

I guess there are good and bad cars. I bought it with 58k sold it with 108k. It was still a very fun car, just a lemon.
