I have a '02 protege' 5

Automatic

I was attempting to replace a stud that a garage snapped off and in the process of trying to take the hub/spindle (whatever you want to call it) off.
I could not get the bolt that screws onto the end of the transaxle off, I pushed out the little indent and wound up cutting really far into the bolt with my chissle, I went at it with an impact wrench, beaker bar with cheater bar, nada, it wont budge. Thats problem number one. Problem number two. I took the cotter pin out of the bolt that comes out of the tie rod end and removed the 14mm bolt to where it was flush with the bottom of the bolt, and then smacked the bottom of nut/bolt to get it to come up off the spindle. It came loose, but now the bolt that comes out of the tire rod end spins around freely when I try to take the 14mm back off, its like its spinning up inside the tie rod end.... I'm baffled. Ill have pics soon. on a good note i got the studd in with the spindle still on the car, I used and impact gun to get it to seat.

That locknut is really on there - 174-235 ft-lbf of torque. Is someone mashing the brakes as you try to loosen it?

Sounds like you may have damaged the threads on the tie rod end when you hit it. If possible, I would try and tighten that nut back up and clean the threads up before trying to remove it again.

Good luck!

the bolt that comes out of the tie rod end, is just spinning inside the tie rod end. im having a hard time explaining it. you can see in the pics that the tie rod end is loose of the spindle, the nut is still on the bottom of the bolt, when i put a socket on that bolt to try to back it off, the whole bolt spinns around. is it supposed to?

does anyone know if the bolt comming out of the tie rod end is a knurled press fit (like the studds) in which case my method of getting it loos may have pussed the bolt out of its seat.

Wow, I have only ever "Cut" the tierod ends off to replace them.

The Nut on the diveshaft is a b****. With someone on the brakes holding the disk, it's alot easier. Get a long "Power Bar" and kill that MOFO. I usually just drill the crimped edge off and replace the nut, that way you can be sure that none of it is holding down...

where can i get a replacemtn tie rod end, they dont carry them at advanced

Well not to sound like an ass but Mazda would probably have them.

Count how many times they rotate to come off and replace the same amount of rotations to aid in the alignment.

The main hub nut may also be rusted on there. Have you tried some liquid wrench? Spray some on there, give it some taps with your wrench to vibrate it a little, and as stated before, get someone to push the brakes for you.

I used a piece of pipe and wedged it between the pedal and the drivers seat, that may work for you.

As for the tie rod. I dunno. I'm guessing you are not replacing it, just trying to get it off, otherwise I'd say just put some locking pliers on the threads and undo it, or cut it.

I got it!!!
Received the part last night from autowarehouse (ebay). It was shipped ups ground and I got it next day! Put it on last night, I had to use a hacksaw to cut the old one off and then used a propane torch to heat up the tie rod end to get it to break loose. I utilized the propane torch again to get the spindle retaining nut to break loose as well! Im never leaving home without that thing!

Were you tring to replace a wheel stud? There is no reason to remove anything but the rotor, caliper, and caliper bracket for that.....

I replaced halfshafts on another car. I had a 9' pry bar, in top gear with brakes on. You will slip the clutch before you break loose the axle nut.

I had a friend with a snap-on impact wrench zip it off in less than 30 seconds. Go find an impact wrench, it's the only way not to break the rest of your car.

Ive got a full service garage full of tools at my disposal, an impact wrench woldnt break it loose, a 3/4" breaker bar with a 6' cheater bar, with me standing on it wouldnt get the job done (230 lb guy), i had to heat the nutt to get it to expand, while the transaxle stayed at a cooler temperature, causeing th bolt to break free.

I was thinking the same thing. Even if you did need to get the hub off, were you just itching to replace a tie rod?

THERES NOT ALOT OF ROOM ROOM TO GET THE STUDD TO BACK OUT, I BENT THE HEAT SHIELD WHEN THE STUD CAME FLYING OUT OF THE HUB. I WAS TRYING TO TAKE THE WHOLE THING OFF FOR EASE OF WORKING SPACE.

Damn caps anyway. Learn something new everyday
