Media composer has changed some since 99. We're still on the meridian hardware since it works, although I'd like to get my hands on an adrenaline system.
You can still learn avid with xpress or even avid free. Some days I kick myself for not knowing ProTools, but I'm starting to move more towards online editing, so now I've got to learn on a Symphony system.
As for LA, I can't complain too much. I've been steadily employed since I moved out here in '01. My college friends and I moved out here with two contacts from internships and somehow we managed to make it out okay. How's the market out there in florida?
Sounds like you're doing well for yourself. You have to have the right combination of skill and attitude to make it. Florida has a pretty good production market here. There's lots of sports. Baseball spring training is my feasting season generally. But there's also football (when the Bucs are doing well), NBA, NHL, NASCAR, golf, etc... I don't work the events - I work on the feature stories. Tampa has a very healthy infomercial market. Lots of infomercial work being done in the Tampa and Orlando area. I've done a few but they generally aren't my thing. Florida is such a wacky state that there's always (it seems) something happening in the news. I haven't had to join any unions yet, but if I keep working alot for NBC and ABC I'll need to join NABET. I knew one person in the market here when we moved down 4 years ago (from NC). I work the equivalent to a part-time job when you figure up the hours. My wife works 2 nights a week as a nurse and we get our insurance through her employer, so it actually works out quite nice. I could probably stand to pick up an extra 20 days or so a year, but as it is it's working out OK. I have 2 kids so it's nice being able to stay at home more often. I used to work in the broadcasting department of an international relief agency, so I traveled extensively around the world for about 4 years. I like being a bit of a homebody, though I generally still go out of the country 1 or 2 times a year now.
