K&N air filter problem

So I opened up my hood this evening to check the oil, and the air filter is disconnected and the clamp no where to be found...:wtf:
I don't know how the hell it came off, maybe the screw got stripped or something. I know it was on tight, because I just checked it a few days ago..Now I know why my car was acting a little funny today, but I never thought the filter was blown off...the car was still running normal enough.. Is there gonna be any permanent damage because of this, and how can i make sure this doesnt happen again?

Thanks for any input

well it was hanging there still connected to the sensor that i put in throught the back of the filter...i also wonder why my check engine light didn't come on or something..? is that sensor even working, or did it not detect anything wrong...

I am currently running a Ractive Cone filter Without the sensor that flows into the air box because the back of my filter is steel and i don't feel like drilling a hole through that. I've had my filter on for over 2 weeks now, and the engine light has never came on once. To me, there's no differences whether the sensor is there or not. I don't even know what it is there for, if it doesn't detect anything?

does your filter have one of those hose clamps that u tighten with a flatehead?

unwrittenLaw, when I installed my K&N filter, I didn't put on that
rubber gasket that was on the stock filter box. But at first try I did just to see if it fit better, well it fit, but 5 min. after it just popped right off. So did you put the rubber gasket? If so, try installing the filter with out it, it fit much tighter......... Hope this helps......

I think you need that rubber seal (gasket). Otherwise; I don't think you can get the correct seal. I have had no problem with mine popping off, and yes; it fits tight. But; maybe there is a better clamp solution, that stays tight. Or maybe; that will need to be checked every once in a while, to make sure it isn't loosening.

I have the rubber gasket on their...i put the clamp on a bit further down filter so hopefully that will hold it on tighter...guess we'll see...

this is how i did my intake

I find that my filter and the clamp is tight enough. I didn't use the gasket that was on the piping. I tried to fit it over, but it wouldn't fit. If you tighten the clamp tight enough, it should be strong enough

well i custom made it using some parts from the local advanced auto parts.... i got a 12 inch piece of 3 inch exaust pipe and a air filter...when i got home i cut a 5 inch piece of pipe drilled a hole in the center for the sensor using the rubber grommet out of the stock air box and used a 3 inch rubber cuppler(same thing my friend used for his intercooler piping) and wham bam turbo spool sounds great, blow-off valve is as loud as my friends tail and that combined with the 9.5 psi of boost im running made my car a whole new beast

well so far it hasn't fallen off again..lol, i think maybe the old clamp just crapped out. i noticed that there isn't a lot of room for the clamp to hold the air filter over the intake pipe..

Cool! That's a neat idea. How are you supporting the piping? I currently have a bracket on my intake by the mass air flow sensor supporting the K&N. But, extending it out is nice. (thumb)

Well! Guess what?! I got home tonight from work, and decided to have a look under the hood, and there lies my K&N disconnected from the intake. The clamp was still around it tight, but the filter slid off. That rubber ring on the intake must be too slippery. I don't know. I guess putting that rubber ring back on wasn't a good idea. Before however; it was fine.

Have far did I drive with it off? Not sure. But; it wasn't more than about 50 miles. I put it back on last night, after removing the K&N, and putting the stock airbox back on Sunday afternoon.

Damn! :bs:

So now; The ring is off and I tightened the clamp down around the tube. It should be okay.

so would you reccomend getting the K&N sounds like it comes off easily. Open air into the engine is def. not a good thing.

Yes; I would recommend it. Just make sure the filter stays put. Without that rubber seal that is on the intake tube that normally seals the airbox to the tube; the K&N has plenty of room to slide over the intake tube. When the clamp is tightened down it feels very set. That rubber seal was slippery enough, I guess, to allow the K&N to slide off - even when tight. I will now be watching it more closely to make sure.

I would say at least change your oil and filter, maybe an engine flush to help get out any junk that might have gotten in there.

It rained here most of the day,,,,,,so all is probably ok. I didn't even think of that earlier.
