Oil Filter Relocation and Oil Cooling pt.2

Well...You could just thread your lines and whatnot before you install it in the car..and put some oil in it and see how much it takes..sort of like a mockup before the actual install...then you can just add that much oil to the normal amount every fillup..

i was thinking of this problem the other day... i figure i could fill up all hoses and oil cooler. before install.. dump them out into a measuring cup, and add that amount to 3.7qts or what ever it is..

Separated at birth? You decide!

StuttersC, did you install the MSP oil cooler yet?

LOL!

No I haven't. I wasn't able to mount the oil/water temp gauge on Wednesday like I was hoping to hve been able to.

I'm kind of dissappointed, but oh well.

I Finnally got off my ass...and bought a kit from Summit Racing:

TRD-1258 Oil Filter Relocation kit Dual Filter 20mm x 1.5 threads

I am confident it will work.... :)

you can look at the kit here: www.tdperformance.com

I would have prefered to use the 90 Degree Oil Bypass Adapter (PN 1458), but Summit Racing did not have that part.

if you look closely at the Filter Mount, you will see that it has 4 ports for you to customize the In and the Out.

I will be using one of the 2 open ports on the filter mount for the Oil Temp sensor I have. It will mount securing to it. If I go with Oil Pressure, then I will use the other opening.

At a later date, I will be adding an Oil Cooler system to this setup which will be straight forward once this part is done.

<!--Signature-->2 Week ETA for delivery to Canada + install with pics.

Woot woot, keep us updated, also I heard of a product that goes around your filter, its all aluminum with fins, heat transfers to it and then dissipates through the fins. The host of the show claimed 20 degree drops in oil temp.

Sweet info man, keep us updated. I would like to do something like this so let us know and try to snap some pics if you can.

Awesome.. im glad someone went ahead and did this. This is definitly up there on my list, it seems i always have another project before this one.

It came in the other day.... I will be using one of the open ports on the filter mount to connect my Oil temp sensor...if I get an oil pressure gauge..I can connect it to the other one. I just need to find a 1/2 NPT to 1/8 NPT reducer and I am set.

I did not go with the oil cooler yet....but I did go with the dual filter kit...

Install is on Sunday and I will post some pice of the install and finished product.

Thanks for the update. Those hoses don't look very long (12-18"?). Where are you planning on locating the filter?

Peace...(hippy)

That is what I need to figure out.... I may have to get longer ones...but we shall see.

Cool...

I was looking at the single filter relocation kit (part #1158). I'm thinking of putting it on when I put in my MSP oil cooler becuase I'm tired of reaching up there to get the dang filter off.

I will be putting in the cooler after I get the dang temp gauge in. That'll be going in as soon as my Euro-626 wiper stalk arrives.

And, yes, you can use a filter relocation kit on the MSP style oil cooler. They have been doing it on Miatas for a long time now.

I also recently saw a DSM car with a similar style oil cooler put on a filter relocation kit.

Ya...I don't see any problems with doing this on an MSP.

In an MSP member of our club will be installing this over the weekend (member: tiwing)

I think you misunderstood what I had said or I wasn't entirely clear on what I meant.

I have the MSP oil cooler to put on my MP3. I plan on using a relocation kit to relocate the oil filter, but I will not be getting an air-to-air oil cooler. I will put the block off plate on the end of the MSP water-to-oil cooler.

I understand now....

I would like to hear more about this kit aswell. nice to see people working for aftermarket support for our cars.

Somewhat off topic:
I was changing the oil filter on my 2002 P5 and a friends 2003 P5 one day and I am 99% sure that the way that metal plate is setup under our cars differs from year of car. It was easier to change the filter on my car than his because of its placement. I may have just been sniffing used oil and going crazy but next time I will try and take a picture and compare.
They don't differ from year to year, but the Auto Protege's have a much bigger one that's harder to get around, while the one on the 5 speed Pros' is smaller.

Since YP5 brought it up, here's a pic of the perma-cool kit installed. part numbers from summit racing: PRM-10195 and PRM-1060.
I got the additional fittings for the thermostat separately (and cheaper). the relocation kit is now installed along with the Greddy Oil Filter Block Adaptor. I'm reading oil temp of 220F once the car is completely warm. the thermostat is designed to begin routing oil through the cooler at about 185F, and to bypass it at lower temps. This will be especially useful up here when it hits -30C in the winter... the oil cooler is not in yet because I wanted to establish base line readings before installing it.

this pic is with the hardpipes removed for the installation - i've found I need some 90 degree fittings to route the oil lines better, and I need 90s on the spin-on adaptor as well. The filter is an "8A" filter, used on Ford 302s, 351s, and 460s. :)

Edit: for the MSP (not sure about the P5/sedan), if you're going to do this mod, you need to get a shorter oil filter mounting bolt (part number BP4W-10-319 from your mazda dealer) and a second nut to help take off the old bolt and install this one (# 9992-22-000). I believe it's a 22mm deep socket, but it might be 24mm. can't remember. I left on the MSP oil cooler as I didn't figure it was doing any harm (or any good).
