    need help with transmisson

I have a late 02 with that tranny from the factory. IMHO it would only be worth it to be able to leave it in 3rd, instead of 1/2/autoD. It DOES NOT change gears fast at all. It's just handy to keep it from hunting a bit a 45mph hilly roads.

    2001 Protege 2.0 random misfire - symptoms

Thanks for the thread guys. My issue comes only for about 500rpms down low, usually 1500-2000, then runs fine. After a few months of slowly getting worse (I don't drive a ton now) it finally threw a CEL code 0303. I assumed the coil fed the direct plug and not the wired length just because it...

    "system too lean"

If there is an issue when you just start to get on the gas, check the air intake tube for cracks, which would get wider as it shifts on the mounts under initial throttle.

Toyo Extensa HP sucks in snow

Yawn... I've lived on the Cont Divide of CO and know snow tires. This is simply a heads up post for others in areas of modest snow, so they can make a better decision about a tire that just came out this fall. Lots of people get around just fine on other AS tires (and I used to). It does not...

Toyo Extensa HP sucks in snow

Toyo Extensa HP suck in deep snow, bad flashbacks to the oem Dunlops, worse than the Kumho ASX, not nearly as good as the Toyo Proxes 4. When it gets deep, these are bad for both starting and stopping. They are quite good in hard rain, deep puddles at hwy speed, bit smoother ride than the...

    Tranny jolts at low speeds

Update, did another drain/refill, figure about 5/8 of fluid is freshened with Valv Max Life. Car is a bit better but by no means fixed. Now wondering if a full flush will really fix it, or money should go into another shop trip. I feel it a wee bit at speed, otherwise either at 1,500 or 2,000...

rear noise + misc (help) Protege ES 2002

If the rear pads look new after 20k, they may not be doing much work. The bridge pins that the caliper slides on (not the piston) may be corroded and binding so the travel is severely limited. They may need a yank/clean/lube. Drive around the block, hit the brakes a few times, see if the back...

    Tranny jolts at low speeds

My fluid had evolved from cherry to medium brick, and oddly had no smell at all. New Valv Max Life has the familiar sewer diesel plus cherry color. Simple drain let out just over 3qts. Car shifts a bit better, 2,000-2,500 is more shrug than judder. I'll go after the rest once my pulled-today at...

    Valvoline Max Life Dex/Merc?

I see a few posts for V M-L being 'good' but the only one I see in local stores is the one covering Dex III (as noted in Mazda) but no Mazda or Multi-vehicle rating (and I know M-V is not Mercon V). Is this still the right sauce, or do I need to keep shopping? Thanks 02 Protege Auto Tranny...

    Tranny jolts at low speeds

My 02 at 96,000 is also just starting that. I thought it was slippage on snow/ice, but roads have been clear this week. Mine is also fine except for dead stop start. I am assuming the fluid pressure/viscosity/shear is no longer right, and plan on a fluid drain/replacement with a 'hi mileage'...

    Clunking

My sway bar end links on my 02 went in that order, back first, front last. FWIW- my front struts went after the end links (big clue was how small bumps made the front wash out on turns) but the rears are still fine, both my rear abs sensors went, but fronts are fine

    winter tires, what size?

There are many more 205 options than the odd 195/50/16, but 195 is best. Wider is not better by design for snow... Keep clicking/digging ;)
