2017~2025 CX-5 over revving to 4100 RPM?

Hello everyone

We've just purchased a used 2017 CX5, GT with relatively low mileage (around +/- 120, 000 km's or 75,000 miles ).

Since I normally drive manual gearboxes (my 2017 Mazda6 GT has a 6 spd manual), I am not used to automatics especially in moderate to heavier accerlations. I've driven 2,700+ km's on it so far (mostly highway) and found out that the CX5 sometimes revs up to around 4100 RPM's and held it for several seconds without upshifting even during moderate accerlation around 80 km/hr (50 mph). It does not always occur on a hill or anything. Is this normal? The car was not loaded nor heavy... I do notice it wants to work hard at 3000-4000 RPM's at cruise control when it felt it needed to do what it took to keep the exact same speed.

(I also notice that I could feel the shifts noticeably when it would downshift from 4000-2500, for example).

Thanks for any insight.

Thanks. No it was in normal mode. It only happened a couple times that I could remember... When I would leave a steady foot.. As if it would think I wanted to slowly accelate to 80 km/hr and hold it steady there... To a point I had to either let my foot off the pedal, accerate harder, or hold it longer til it would decide to up shift itself.. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Do the transmission relearn process. I don't have the link now but it's been mentioned in the forum before
Thanks, I will search for it. I've heard about something like that but it sounded like it is primarily for hard shifting between 2nd and 1st gear.. (?) But could there be harm if done incorrectly?

It can clean up all sorts of odd shift behavior on the cars. I have had many people told they need a new transmission from the local Mazda dealer stop by and after I went on a road test with them put the transmission into learning mode and its cleaned up the complaints. It wont hurt anything to try, if there is something wrong with the transmission it won't fix it however.

Thank you very much! So if I do it incorrectly, it wouldn't mess anything up... And I can freely retry it over and over again. Never knew such a reset existed... A mechanic told me that sometimes they rev up high because it senses a higher torque (for some reason), but going to 4000-5000 RPM's won't hurt the engine... Just harder on fuel... as long as we don't hit the red zone

Don't worry, Mazda didn't make a fragile engine with the Skyactiv-G. It can take it.

As for the transmission reset, it will reset learned behavior and likewise, won't hurt anything.

Thanks very much for the peace of mind!

Once using the manual mode downshifting on a steep hill, I accidently shifted it to 1st gear and it jumped from arouns 2200 to 5200 RPM's for a couple of seconds.. This should not have hurt anything either?

You must have shifted down by 2 gears, not just 1.

Generally, the computer is programmed to disallow things that would harm the engine or transmission. That said, regular abuse could cause wear over time.

Thanks. Yeah I'm still trying to get used to automatics' manual mode. I think some cars have the "-" and "+" reversably placed.. Such as the rental I had last week. So I meant to upshift but downshifted twice by error.

We can freely shift to/from Manual mode while the car is in motion (no matter the speed) , correct? Same goes for Sport mode?
